My brother and I drew the late muzzie tag for this hunt. I have talked to some guys who have had the tag and sounds like a fun hunt with potential for a good buck. Sounds like the later the better and weather helps. Anyone on here have any insight or maybe past tagholders? Tks

Yep,

Do NOT hire Doug Gattis, Southern Oregon Gamebusters out of Medford.
Old, cranky, with 160'acres of leased property where high powered target shooting, mountain bikers and dogs trail, and a diesel repair shop reside. He will ##### you out if a spec of dirt falls off your boot onto his floor mat. I saw a few 2 year old bucks that would easily score 75", and a bunch of does.

OK, I feel better; do not pass by the pre-rut, and beginning of the season.
Hope you have much better luck than I did burning eight points and $4K.

Why didn't you hire Spoon Creek Outfitters?

4k...You should have looked at Mike Lee. Hind sight is always 20/20. Sorry to hear about your hunt.

Didn't mean to sound negative. Mike Lee kills some studs in the Applegate. Maybe he can come hunt with me for free. He would probably appreciate a trophy blacktail, unlike some ungrateful Idaho guy that I know. Lol.

I'm still p'ssed off, but went on his (old) repetition , and did an awful job checking references. It was the first time I only called one ref. So really, I'm mad at myself. I take every opportunity to warn people as the Oregon Fish and Game did nothing, even after the investigation.....

Still looking for that Blakie and a Sitka to get my slam. Someday :)

Good luck!!

Ed

Thanks guys for the input and warnings. Plan to go self guided at this point. Friend of mine had the tag a couple years ago so have that info to help mostly trying to decide what time frame to go. WOuld like to go right after thanksgiving but was told later is better and I can only give it a week.

I will be on this hunt this year my girl friend drew the tag and I have been on the hunt with friends in the past and always had the best luck around thanksgiving we are taking the week before off. To state what you already know when its bad weather go if there is a clearing glass it and don't be afraid to hit a couple horns together good luck and keep us posted on how you do.

Well its getting closer!! Wondering if anyone has the rifle tag on here which is prior to the muzzie hunt? Any locals with a rut report would be cool too. Blacktails up in the nw are just getting going good here which is mayber just a little later than normal so wondering whats going on down there. Tks

nwHunter, some of the bucks down here are out cruising and I seen a couple average bucks with some does. My brother in law has the tag this year and we saw a big 4x4 buck out cruising in the middle of the day last weekend. Have fun, keep your powder dry, and good luck!

I think the season ends this Sunday.
Would be nice to hear how it was.
Does anyone know if they got much snow?

Bill

I don't think there was any significant amount of snow.

I too would like to hear how people did on this hunt....

LAST EDITED ON Dec-09-14 AT 07:59AM (MST)[p]I live in Medford n just a smidgeon of snow on the sisQ so could not of been much, I'm just curious how the rut went over there, I hunted the late archery east side I-5 freeway n it was not much to speak of...but I wasn't toating a muzzle loader either...

It was a pretty fun hunt but tougher than I expected. Rut seemed to be about over, lots of does with no bucks around. Did see a few nice bucks and lots of average. I was lucky enough to get a 4x3 about 19" wide on second to last day. Very little action in the mornings with the full moon and nothing mid day so it was a quick evening hunt and always got dark to soon. No snow at all where we were. If we could change anything probly should have gone a little earlier in the season.

From what I understand from a taxidermist I use in Medford, the rut came early this year by a few weeks. The end of the rifle season was great, and muzzy season was less productive compared to past years. Those that hunted the first part of the muzzy had more opportunities than those that hunted the last part. Makes you wounder if we are heading into a new cycle of earlier than normal rut dates.

NWhunter, you willing to post a picture of your buck?

I have to agree we were waiting for it to start, which seemed to never happen, so it may have started early......
