A-1 (C zone archery) tag

Hey guys, haven't posted in a while, but need a bit of help. Drew this tag on second choice, never hunted these zones. Was thinking about trying C-1 up on the Ore. border. Any suggestions as to where we (my sons and I)might start? Thanks in advance

I've only had a C tag once so I know very little about it but I work with several guys that hunt around Chester. 2 years ago they took 5 bucks for the 7 of them. Last year a lot slower, 2 bucks I believe.

If I had the tag I would look at the C4/X4 boundary. I see decent bucks crossing Hiway 44 regularly. Not like 15-20 years ago but still a few bucks.

Good luck

CalElkslay is right on, there's some good bucks that cross right through there. I've always thought about hunting archery there, just never have.

I like the idea of hunting that spot too but in the last 2 seasons i have spent 4 days there from the hyw 36/44 junction up to the hog flat area and still have yet to turn up a deer. Not one deer!

I did see sign, some, and some of it looks pretty good. There's decent food and water. That is just a place that there should be way more deer there than there actually is.

For archery, look on a map just north and West of Chester. There's a Boyscout camp, Fleshmen? That area before the camp and around the side is pretty good!

Thanks again guys for the C zones info, I will definitly take it to heart, I have BLM maps for the areas, I'll check them out.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-26-14 AT 11:51AM (MST)[p]I used to guide in the c zone but if I tell you where to go I'd b hung give me a minute to think about bout it....awe hell I'll pm u shortly...

We regularly hunt A1 - C4.

The zone has a lot of deer, a lot! But it also has tons of hunters. We use treestands over trails.

The frustrating part is all of the road hunters, but then again, I think they also keep the deer moving.

My partners would kill me if I gave out the details, but if you find old tree stands, that's a sign that you could be in a decent area.

Just get used to seeing other hunters.

Cheers,
Stuart

I have this tag for 4th time this year and last 3 years also hunted bizz johnson trail around 36/44-hog flat area with only having 1 stalk opportunity that was blown by road hunter. Thinking about trying caribou wilderness. Any advise on where to enter from
looks like east, north or south have trail heads? And hunting pressure opening day? Trying to get away from all the road hunters n not afraid to hike a few miles in.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-29-14 AT 11:02PM (MST)[p]That whole area by the Echo Lake, southern access to Caribou W., is pretty good. The access is a couple miles from Echo Lake. The roads get pounded by road hunters but not many get out of their rigs. Some really nice bucks, great water, nice feed, big timber habitat with meadows mixed in. There are deer there!!

Thanks Joey! Think I will grab my fly rod n Binos and go scout it out this week end.

Good place for it. Echo used to be really good Brookie fishing but last couple tries there, all i came up with is some fairly large trash minnows and a couple dink brookies.

I've not been in the Wilderness from that parking lot Trail-head access but have been told that some of the lakes close by on the trail(s) are very good. The country just past, a mile or so, the last turn off to the access is really nice. I've not killed there but i too, mostly just cruised thru, seeing what could be seen from the road and admired the possibilities.

As you probably know, there are nowhere near the deer numbers in c-4 compared to even 15-20 years ago...and that was maybe a 1/4 of the deer there was in the 60's and 70's. I've seen it when a drive up in that country, you could easily count up a couple hundred deer in a evening without trying. No so anymore but it's a really good place to try!

Didn't see any deer but hiked a ways into wilderness n looks like good area, lots of tracks. That forest is THICK, they could be 20 yards away n not know it. either have to set a tree stand or stalk edge of meadow. Did see lots of bear sign, lots of dead fall trees for them to tear up. Hauling a bear out would not be fun though.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-03-14 AT 02:14PM (MST)[p]I'm going to share something that i learned from a guy who hunts outside the wilderness. He hunts other places too but often pegs a couple big bucks in just that area.

Like most who are successful in this county, they hunt the trails. No news flash there as after spending the first few of over 30 years hunting this Zone, with some exceptions, i figured that guys who hunt the trails here will do better than the general run of hunter out there just because 99% of the country is so thick with timber.

The part that i learned was that they hunt the trails but not the bigger migratory trails that most people like to set up on. They set up on the little everyday trails that the bucks they are targeting make when going from bed to water to feed and back again. Some or most of these trails don't look like much, maybe just indicated by the disturbed foliage, but for those who put in the time to locate the better bucks, their daily trails to them look like a good head for the wall and a half full freezer.

In this kinda country, especially in the earlier parts of the year, IMO, this is good info!

Just got back from 2 days hunting. Meadow was swarming with hundreds of mosquitoes, would that keep the deer away? I did get a shot at a little 3x3 unfortunately he was 50 yards n I ranged a tree limb in front of him @ 40. I did see a nice
4x4 muley crossing highway n think I found trail he is using to go from food to bed so that is game plan for Thursday

I hope I am not ruining anyone else's hunt with this comment, but I watched a fair (23") four-by-four just north of Greenville, along with a smaller three pointer. They were in the meadow along the creek just behind the "Welcome to Indian Valley" sign. They are in there pretty regularly, and are going to get killed on the highway if one of you local MM guys doesn't put him in the freezer. It might seem like shooting fish in a barrel, but I would rather see him in the freezer than on someone's hood. Good luck.

I little info, not saying if it's good or bad...

The local butcher that is stationed in our small town Grocery Store here in Westwood has taken in 33 deer and one bear.

I asked him if any good racked bucks came in and he said that after 10 years of doing this, a young guy, they all look pretty much alike. From his response, you can tell he doesn't himself hunt.

I Would recommend these guys to do your deer for you if in the area. I asked and he said that the average cost of hang, cut, and wrap is about $80.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-28-14 AT 09:48PM (MST)[p]its been tuff in C 1 this year for the family but a couple big dudes running around up there but everybody's after them so they're spooked big time...B-6 is the hot spot this year due to the fires...

Yeah b6... "C'mon man!" Most of b6 is and will be in fire closure for the season. Send em to your back yard- pretty sure you don't live in b6; however we may have some good hunting in the future years!

On another note... "Vizsla2 aka Stuart". Is your last name itoga? If so shoot me a PM- you may be a past contact from humboldt state
