The morning was very slow. But we made up for it big
in the afternoon/evening shoot. We had a few Eurasians
in the mix. As always....it was a fun shoot.

Last time I hunted for dove was 8 years ago down in Texas on the opener. I have nowhere to hunt dove in Cali, that I am aware of? Looking for a public place, a private invite, or suggestions of "pay to hunt". Anyone have any thoughts you are willing to share?More than willing to drive a couple/few hours. I live in Ukiah area.
Any suggestions or offers would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
rr

Rando, i always preaching knocking on doors and asking permission because it worked when guys asked my Grandfather and it still seems to work for me.

Just a thought, Railroad property and RR right of ways, i've been told and believe to be true, is open to hunt on. Pick a area known to be birdy with food, water, a set or two of railroad tracks, and you just might pick a winner.

Retrieving a down bird over the fence in the farmers field though, you're on you own! :)

you better watch out on RR property you can get arrested because it is private property they will cite you and some cases arrest people this is a rail road thing

Ok, i stand More informed. Updated is more like it. Years ago, we had a great dove spot along the tracks. There was a shallow ditch pond and nothing but fresh tilled dirt clods on the other side of the fence. Birds came to water off the field and both ways, right along the tracks. Great shooting, used by lots of guys, never a issue, and we believed ourselves to be totally legal.

I think doves are afraid of getting lost. They like to use a tree line, fence, canyon bottom, or RR tracks to guide them where they want to be. :)

So some digging on the net shows that yes, you COULD get in trouble hunting RR property. It's the times that we are in with lawsuits and such. When one RR employee was asked about hunting a spot along the tracks, she said, "why not? It's not like there is going to be anyone out there to bother you..." Maybe like me, she needed to be better informed before commenting.

yes she needs to learn the rules to the railroad will ticket you for beaning on their property and the side roads might be legal I am not sure of that

Thanks for that info.
As mentioned prior...I would be happy to hear of some "pay to hunt" spots. When I last hunted dove, in TX, it seems like we each paid $50/day to hunt "a field"...and we had a great shoot. Have never hunted dove in Cali, and would love to hear of different opportunities...on the legal side of the tracks! :)
Thanks!

We hunt pheasant along the RR tracks because a lot of grain falls out the grain cars. Never have anyone tell us no, BUT then its in a hunting state and Not California.

Reminds my of a old Joke:

a guy has no place of his own to hunt pheasants so he hunts the Rail Road tracks out by some farmers fields. A beautiful rooster gets up and he nails it but when it fell, it was over on the private land.

?Where in the hell,do you think you're going city boy?? The farmer yells as the hunter crawled under the fence.

?I'm going to get my Rooster.? The hunter replies.

?It's on my property, it's my bird? The farmer again says,

They go back and forth getting louder all the time. Finally, the farmer says, ?I'll tell you what, we'll settle this country style.? The guy says, ?What's that?? The farmer says, ?Well, I kick you in the balls as hard as I can, and then you kick me in the balls as hard as you can, and we keep this up and the last man standing keeps the Bird.?

The guy not wanting to return home empty-handed reluctantly agrees. The farmer wearing large heavy work boots haul back and kicks the guy in the balls with all his might. The guy?s eyes roll back in his head, he coughs and wheezes but barely manages to remain standing. After a few minutes, he composes himself somewhat and says to the farmer, ?Okay you SOB, now its my turn.?

The farmer laughs and replies, Naw, You go ahead and keep the bird.? :)
