Archery season is my chance to scout a little before rifle season as I just don't get the free time to get out. I have only had the chance to walk three or four times for couple hours each and this past Friday I got my clients fish cleaned and sacked, raced home and changed and went for a walk at noon.
I came across some great beds and trails and could see fresh sign everywhere so I felt good as I elevated from 6500 ft to 9000ft. @ hours in my legs were rubbery and I was on my decent to go get kids from school when I saw a small buck bedded above me at 50 yds. Having two tags we usually take a meat buck then try to be picky from there. So the little guy stood and was just about to die when this buck stood and went uphill before he turned and looked down the hill. He only gave me a neck/small shoulder shot at 60 yds but I settled my 60 pin and let the NAP mechanical blade I wanted to try fly. The tell tale whap with a face plant let me know my shot was true and he never regained his feet and rolled 25 yds down and expired in 2 min or so. I was surprised to see no velvet on him as his little buddy and all other bucks we have seen have had velvet still.
I usually break deer down but was a little unprepared so I gutted him and dragged him down 1.5 miles and then came out the last mile as my buddy offered help. I changed out of my boots, camo clothes and hat that were soaked and put on summer clothes thus the funny photo.
Good fun on solo walk and I am happy with my meat buck! My friend also got a nice 4x3 2 weeks ago on open that had some rely nice bucks running with him!
I am amazed at the entry wound the broad head produced and dead is dead but it did bend a bit slowing penetration. I would not hesitate to use them again. I tried to load photo of the 4x3 but I need to resize it I think.
