Likely Tables Success

Well, got up into Likely 2 days before the opener. Found goats in the normal spots, but man were they small. A buddy told me of a different spot to try, less pressure, found this 14 1/4" buck at 423 yards. Has great hooks and good mass.

That's a Great Buck, really nice all around qualities! Just over 80" i'd guess.

I think he will go high 70's. What you guys think? I didn't really score him, taxidermist is going to and let me know what it's at. I think his bases were at 6 2/8 but besides that and the length, that's all I measured.

From the pic, i thought his bases might be closer to 7". Still though, a heavy lope, really nice hooks, i like him no matter what he scores.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-14-14 AT 09:47AM (MST)[p]Brian, let me know if you draw this tag.

This was period 2. I found a water hole about 1 mile off the main road on the tables, sat on it till around 2:00pm on opening morning. Had about 50 goats around me and they kept funneling into the water then would leave. Didn't see anything over 12", seen one maybe pushing 13" but really weak prongs. A big group of about 30 was behind me that looked to have a good buck in it, but was always on the move.

Here's the biggest I seen through the spotting scope, maybe 13" but 2" cutters.

Here they are walking by me as I sat under a tree, they would come by at 50 - 100 yards, just nothing worth shooting.

Thanks for the info HogWild. I've hunted Likely a couple times. I did notice that after a few days, the bigger bucks get killed or pushed off the Tables, leaving mostly does and small bucks. That's when you need to hit those out of the way places like you did. Good job!

Eel

Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded.

I think there are great bucks taken every year, in that mid to high 70's range with the occasional even higher then that. I just think the smaller bucks, high 60's or very low 70's are the ones you will typically see. To see bigger, the smarter bucks will go to areas with less pressure and hide out, a lot of the good areas are surrounded with cedars and harder to see the bigger bucks, they just stay out of sight.

Thats just my opinion on what I seen on my trip, plenty of goats just most were in that 12" range or smaller.

There was a toad killed this year scores around 85...another one that was 84 or better I would say out of zone 2. I took one right at 80 in zone 2, once it dries it will be a little short though I fear. Great time, wish I could do it more than once in my lifetime.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-14 AT 06:38PM (MST)[p]Congrats HogWild on your CA Pronghorn....you are now a member of a select group of CA hunters that have had the pleasure of pulling the trigger on a Golden State Goat.

Here is my sons buck from last year on the Jr hunt.

You can't kill one sitting on the couch!

Hey Guys, bobcat743 drew the tag this year and his bud had to drop from the hunt. He could use some help. I'd help Hank if i could, he's a good dude from my home town. How about it?

I'm sure he'd like to hear from anybody with antelope info, Likely tables hunt.

I saw the picture of that buck that was mid eighties. What a toad. It was harvested off the beaten path by himself.

Hank, It's been quite a few years since I've been on that unit but I've hunted it a few times over the years. If I could go with you I would, but the reality is you don't really need too much help. An extra set of eyes always helps though, of course.

You're in good shape! (getting the tag is the hard part). Even though it's been years since I was there I would go in a heart beat as pronghorn are still pronghorn. It's not like they hide in the brush intentionally like a wise old mule deer.

Get your map so you can define the boundary of your unit and identify public land. Modoc National Forest map is all you need. It shows the BLM land, where most of the pronghorn will be. South of Alturas and north of Likely, east of 395 up to the timber is prime hunting. Huge area.

Just get in your truck in the morning and start putting around and glass as much territory as you can. Stop and glass and keep moving. If you see a swale that you can't see into from the road, park and hike over the rise so you can see as much as possible. This is important, especially in areas without too many roads. You don't need to take off on a long hike although you might if you want to get completely away from roads and people. Just enough to see as much ground as possible. Remember, the number of pronghorn you see will be directly related to how much ground you look over!

They bed down in the heat of the day so you won't see much movement. That's a good time to take a nap if you're so inclined:), but they do go to water during the day and will travel quite a ways so expect to see animals at just about any time.

If you start getting discouraged, stop in at the F&W office in Alturas and speak to a warden or biologist. I'm pretty sure they will give you some recent sightings as they have helped many pronghorn hunters over the years and they want you to be successful!

Good luck and be safe!

Guns are like parachutes. If you need one and don't have one you probably will never need one again.

Thanks Eelgrass, very nice of you!! Anybody else with info can PM Bobcat, Hank, directly from his post #15 above.

Antelope is a vert special draw that doesn't come around very often. I drew in 1987 then putting in every year, again in 2012 or something like that. It's highly likely that for those that have drawn, it will be a very long time if we ever draw again. Might as well help a good guy out!

Those needing info on area 5, Big valley. I can help! Thanks!
