Where are you building points?

All this hunting has me already thinking about next year. I'm new to putting in out of state. I started building points a few years ago in Nevada and California. I am now looking into expanding and trying to put in for other states next year. Not looking for any super crazy hunts just like to be able to build each state a few points and draw decent tags different years. What states are you putting in for? I would like to put in for mule deer in a few different places and possibly look for a cow and or bull tag. Looking to start some research now. To be ready cone draws next year thanks for the help in advance.

CALI, NEVADA, UTAH, ARIZONA, COLORADO, WYOMING, FOR ELK, DEER, LOPE, MOOSE, SHEEP,BUFFALO,,HAVALINA,& TURKEY. HAVE MAX POINTS FOR SOME,.....APPROX. 170 PLUS POINTS IN ALL. THIS HAS BEEN A GREAT HELP IN DRAWING TAGS.........I HAVE SPENT A GOOD NUMBER OF POINTS AS WELL.................YD.

California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Oregon, mostly for deer. I will stop purchasing Oregon points once I finally draw--their system screws the non-resident badly.

It's a little confusing putting in out of state trying to learn there different systems how much money are you putting out each year for out of state license and points? Because I think every state requires you to purchase a license now right? I really like the Nevada system wish they all were the same. Sounds like some of you are buying multiple out of state license and application fees.

I believe that all of the states to which I apply do require a license, and that I do not receive a refund if not drawn. On the other hand, some charge more than others for that license. In addition, some will refund your tag application fee if not drawn, and others will not. Whatever the cost of the license and tags, there are some states that are simply a bad deal if you enter the drawing expecting to compete for the best hunts. Oregon, for example, may have no nonresident tags at all for its best units because they may be diverted to outfitters. It makes sense, therefore, to apply for less popular, lower-quality hunts in some states, because you will die of old age before you ever draw out. Even California is rough on the younger hunters. To have any chance at all on the 90% tags for Goodale, etc, you will have to forego any first choice units and then outlive the generations of hunters that have preceded you in the draw as you accumulate thirty or forty points (who knows how many it will take).

Bullskin I totally agree with you about Oregon, I have 7 deer and elk points and 13 antelope. I also put in for points in Nevada, Wyoming and Colorado. I stopped putting in for Utah and I put in for New Mexico but they don't have points.

I have been putting in and building points (where they exist) in AZ, CA, CO, ID, IA, KS, NM, NV, MT, OR, UT, WY for most species since the late '90's. Have drawn some great tags but in some states I am not getting much closer to drawing than when I first started. As NR tag quotas continue to be reduced while license and app fees continue to be increased, I would be careful where I spend my application money if I was just getting started. If you want to hunt non-trophy units especially for deer and elk then a couple of points will definitely help you draw a tag. A subscription to Eastman's or Huntin' Fool to get educated on each states draw system and to help you plan your draw strategies and what states to apply for with your hard earned dollars going forward might prove to be a wise investment...

My son and I have been building points in CA, AZ,NV, OR, WY and UT. So far, at 26 years old, my son has already drawn a Nevada pronghorn tag, Utah Youth any bull, Arizona muzzleloader bull, Arizona Kaibab late deer and we just returned last week from another Arizona muzzleloader bull hunt where he shot a 361+ 6x7.

Next year, he'll either draw Wyoming moose in one of their top 2 units or Utah LE muzzleloader elk, and who know what else he might draw.

That doesn't include the nice tags I've drawn and will draw above his.

Building points definitely pays off.
