Rutting Buck during J-12 hunt

For the record, here is the buck my friend's son elected to take.... a really old warrior. This buck had several broken tines and numerous scars from previous battles. It was obvious that that he was the dominant buck of the area we hunted. We even witnessed him breed a doe several times before taking him.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-14 AT 05:13PM (MST)[p]Congrats to your friends son on a nice buck. We also saw that big 3 point at 40 yards but passed

Nice bucks and pics congrats to the hunters. Looking at the terrain it looks like desert? Can you tell me where the J-12 Round Valley hunt takes place. Some day we may want to try and put our Grandson in for that hunt. Looks like a fun time. We have never researched those types of youth hunts....I assume it must be a draw special hunt ? If you put in for that type hunt can the youth still get an A zone tag?
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

J-12 is off Hwy 395 near the town of Bishop. It is a draw only (10 tags). The odds are very difficult, but an awesome hunt if drawn. It is a "must apply" for any junior hunter.
If you are unsuccessful for J-12, you can obtain an A Zone tag.
Start applying at the earliest age possible (12 Years Old when the hunt takes place). You can get a preference point if not drawn. My son and a nephew have drawn over the years.

Sling, thanks for the info. I will get him started next hunting season.
Very very excited thanks again. He is 12yrs old 13 in Feb. can't wait for him to draw that tag.

Kids get 4 shots at it, must be over 12 and under 16 on July 1 of the application year. Three points is max points and draw odds with 3 points are pretty good for a hunt of this quality. The kid can use the second deer application to apply foe apprentice hunts and a first to apply for the regular draw hunts. Be a bit careful applying on the first (a lucky Goodale tag would be cool)as drawing a first pick in the first three years on either application zeros points and pretty much kills chances of drawing the J12 in the fourth year.
