QUESTION FOR ANY OF YOU FELLAS THAT HAVE EVER DRAWN A CALI ELK TAG. IF A GUY DRAWS A RIFLE TAG FOR ELK, CAN HE HUNT DOWN WITH A BOW AS IN OTHER STATES????? I DONT THINK (FIND) IT IN THE REGULATIONS BOOKLET. THANKS..............YD.

I don't think any hunts are classified rifle hunts we just assume they are because 90%+ of hunters use rifles during the general season.I do know if you draw a muzzy tag it is muzzy only no lesser weapon like a bow can be used because it is designated with the word muzzloader.

What is considered max points for the california elk drawing system? Are cow and bull points seperate? Wondering if it's worth me beginning to build points at age 26 never put in for these tags in the passed

I THINK MAX POINTS ARE AT 13 THIS YEAR, OR CLOSE TO IT. THE POINTS ARE CHEAP IF YOUR A RESIDENT, AT AGE 26 I WOULD APPLY................YD.

Fishing,

Like was said, it's less than $10.00 to apply.

If you draw in the MAX point pool it'll be when you're in your 60's or 70's. But you could draw this year in the random draw.

But you can't draw if you don't apply.

I missed the the first year so I'm the same as a guy with 0 points.I would like to see Ca. Have a system like Nevada at least the younger hunters could have a better chance of drawing a tag.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-15 AT 10:50PM (MST)[p]With the amount of tags the state gives out for elk hunts a nevada type system really does no good, and it would especialy punish us max point holders and even at max points we barley have a chance for a tag as is.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-15 AT 05:28PM (MST)[p]Long time Cali hunter and long time Cali elk draw applicant.
I have put in for a La Panza elk tag for over 30 years and never have been drawn. Before and after the points system we now have...
I understand that there are only 6 tags for this hunt, but I have seen many first time applicants pull a tag(even posted in the DFG Big game Digest).
After this year I will stop applying here in Ca for these premium draws, which do have a sliding point scale. It goes up every year, so if you had max points last year you do not this year...
It is far easier and far cheaper to apply out of state, even with the reduced quotas. I have been drawn for multiple deer and elk tags over the years out of state. I still await a single CA elk tag.
There are so many elk around where I live that ranch owners beg me to come and hunt them\All it takes is that one little tag...

easymoney,

I get it, you're disappointed that you haven't drawn. A lot of us haven't but we have supported the recovery programs, a point of pride i believe, and because so, we do get a outside chance to draw out.

btw, tough to beat $8. to apply for elk at the click of a button. :)

I was fortunate to draw the Fort Hunter ligget bull tag in 2012, even though i'm not at max points any longer I still put in for the hunts. I also drew X3B the same year (3rd time), drew Likely Tables Antelope 2nd period last year. So, I know it gets frustrating putting in and not drawing the tags, but you can't draw if you don't apply. I have been fortunate for sure..

EasymoneyI Could you explain the sliding scale to me. I tried looking it up

but can't find anything on it. Thanks Mike

What I think he is referring to as sliding scale is what others call points creep. When there is a pool of max points applicants far exceeding the tag quota, it takes one point more each year just to be in the running.

lucky; no chit Hog.....

lets get real here, Cali was my home state since i was 3, if you wait 30 years to draw a tag n with no luck, well somethings gotta change, a draw system is supposed to even out the odds a bit, like the fact that most draw hunts in Cali should be a once in a life time hunt and u never get to apply again...

if you draw an elk or a muley tag in a trophy unit bye bye your done, that way it won't complicate the system or add to it, look at the antelope hunt it used to be a 10 year waiting period be fore you could even apply again, is it still? IDK..

case n point i have been applying for M9 way before they had a draw system and with 11 BP still no go, and every year they drop the tag quota, I'm 58 and don't have alot of use left of my knees, so unless you got alot of $ your screwed waiting in ?Calif...not to mention i know people who have drawn numerous times one guy drew a X unit three times in 10 years, hows that work?

I wished they would adopt Nevada system. I have 14 points in nevada across the board
still didn't draw this year. people with 0 points at least have a chance.

The system can't change the fact that when there are 100+ applicants per tag and a person has maybe 50ish years to draw if you start young, most will never draw.
