I've been applying for the M-9 hunt before they went to the draw, I had 11 BP and still no tag, it's gotta be rigged both my boys drew when they were 13, I never have, what a bunch of crap...

and no C tag either...screw Cali.......

U just suck. lol. Is 11 max. I did not think it was. If u did not have max u had little to no shot but random. I know of 3 guys that sent for m9 with max and did not draw. I think there was a lot of point jumpers this year

LAST EDITED ON Jun-12-15 AT 11:23AM (MST)[p]Without max points most premium hunts in CA are a long shot. However, I have a buddy that's drawn FHL tule elk bull and Likely pronghorn in CA without max points!

and how does that work wouldn't one say the system is flawed, if thats the possibility then why have a draw system...

LAST EDITED ON Jun-12-15 AT 11:43AM (MST)[p]I personally can't stand CA's draw system. The way it's set up it leaves little chance for anyone less than max points to draw a tag. The only system that may be worse is Colorado's preference point system that issues ALL tags to those with the most points. At least in CA folks less than max have a chance. I say go with NV's system, which rewards those with a higher number of points, but allows folks with very low points a fair chance at a tag. I have a ton of points in NV and know full well I may never draw a sheep or elk tag, but squaring my 14 elk points this year gave me a solid chance with 196 + 1 = 197 chances!!

Manny,
those non resi license are costy...
them non resi points getting to fester...
Oregon must be suitable nuff for ya
I never heard you whine bout it..
Ca system has issues and will never
get any better only worse...
nothing bother me more than folks who
move outta state then whine about
hunting or the state political agendas on
California wildlife..and the bunting.
we get it ...
it will never be like it was anywhere!
better to be lucky than good..

All points systems suck when the stack of applicants exceeds the better part of a person's life. Just go straight random draw and maybe put a once in a lifetime cap on those really tough draws!

ya and nothing bothers me more then people who can't relate,,,Blah blah...

its not getting to the point but already is a rich mans game, period, so why not make it a more level playing field, you draw your once in a life time tag your done...bye bye and that goes for everywhere colorado ect: there just ain't enough to go around anymore so just let the boys with the most $ have it all right...BS

yup.......

I love the Ca. Preference point system, as I think it is the most fair one out there. Give those that have been putting in the longest have the best chances. Those that don't have max point still have a slim chance, but at least a chance. Before the point system some people were getting lucky and hunting some of the best zones several times, while others were putting in every year and getting nothing. Why should someone get to hunt a zone like X5B every few years and most others never get drawn. I would much rather know how many years it will take to get a tag and plan accordingly. I was able to hunt X5B a couple of years ago burning my max points. It took about ten years, but I knew I would get drawn. I might of never gotten drawn the way it used to be. Now if I want to hunt it again, I know I will have to wait another 10-15 years, but at least I know I will make it.

Preference is based upon everyone getting their turn in a reasonable number of years and taking the randomness out so some don't draw several times while others don't get drawn once. It's fine for demand like our deer hunts have, your choice to pick the tough ones... But for 100's to one type demand, a wait your turn isn't going to work. Most will die waiting!

I'm not a fan of the Kali system either. IMO NV is the best, weighted but not guarenteed, WY second with 25% random instead of the 10% Kali has

BUT! Manny, your state is the worst!!!!

They give 5% tags to NRs for elk and deer, AND the guides get 1/2 of those!!!!! So I'm applying for 2 1/2% of the allotted tags.

WHOOPS. I forgot that on antelope NRs get 3% of the tags.

Probably why ORE hasn't gotten my $$$ since their price increase 4-5 years ago.

funny part is i applied for an draw elk tag in oregon with 4 BP supposedly it only takes 3 well i didn't get drawn but my son who had zero BP's got drawn, now if that ain't frustrating i don't know what is LOL......yah i'm whining

GOOD POINT ELKSLAYER.......OREGON IS THE ONLY STATE I WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER BOTHERING WITH TO HUNT.................YD.

I also like this system we have now. It makes it much easier to plan a vacation if you work for a place that requires you to requests time off months in advance. You pretty much know when you should draw a tag. As for the very limted tags...you know what you are getting into when to apply. You are going to wait years (maybe forever) for a sheep, strip, MANY elk draws, etc. in ANY state. If you think some of these CA deer tags are worth waiting 10-15-20 years for...then you have a screw loose anyways. Either that or you are not aware of what can be had with FAR fewer points out of state!
The only thing I would change is I would like to see the random drawing go from 10% to 25%.

Help me out here. Seems Nevada has a great system yet no ther state uses that system. Explain to me how squared points increases your odds?

i shouldn't say this on open forum but oregon elk herds are growing, the deer herds are at an all time record lows...

LAST EDITED ON Jun-15-15 AT 06:06PM (MST)[p]Like several others here, i like the system Cali has for it's draw and i like the way our current hunt zones are broken up. If a guy like Manny, has even 1 point less than absolute Max points, he needs to lower his sights on which zones he applies for if he wants to draw a tag! There are just too many guys with max points who also have patiently been standing in line waiting their turn.

Someone above recommended tweaking our current system to allow more opportunity to Random tags. I could go along with that suggestion, actually i think a very good one. Making the random draw anywhere from 20 to 40% of available tags for the units wouldn't bother most but would give those younger or with less than max points, a better chance to draw the tough to draw hunts.

I think much more important to us than any possible draw systems or changing there of, is the proposal consolidating units throughout the State, our Directors becoming even more pro-predator promoting the wolf and ignoring the cougar, and establishing more doe hunts in areas where the herds are already seriously depleted, doing so because there are few if any other cards in their hand that they can play.

IMO, all these current considerations by our Ca Dept of Wildlife are a much greater danger to our hunting heritage, our best hunts within the state, and another nail in the coffin along to way to someday having no Deer hunting at all allowed in this State.

The way we get our tags? it ain't broke and none are perfect...

YBO, Nevada uses a computer to assign each applicant a random number. It could be a high number or a low number or anywhere in between.

If you have 0-1 bonus point, you are assigned one random number.(1X1=1)

If you have 2 or more bonus points, they are squared, ie 2X2=4. The computer then assigns you 4 random numbers. The lowest of those 4 random numbers is the number used to determine your drawing order.

A person with 8 bonus points (8X8=64) has 64 chances to draw a low(er) number.

BUT, a person with 1 point could get lucky and draw a low number.

I like Nevada because of this.

I think Cali draw system is ok other than I think they could allot a higher percentage to the random draw. Guys with less than max putting in for a max point unit should not be expecting a tag on choice 1. It's very easy to check the draw stats of previous years to see how many points are needed for a particular zone.
Nevadas system is ok because everyone has a chance to draw a high demand hunt. But at the same time if all u do is put in for high demand hunts you could strike out there and never draw a tag if u don't have some luck. Cali calls there system a modified preference point system: a preference point draw with a random draw. I would take it a step further and do a random draw, a bonus point draw where you square points, and then a preference point draw where most points have priority. The allocation of tags for each draw is up for debate. Just my thoughts. This would make everyone happy (except for those who are never happy). Truth is with random or bonus point systems you still need some luck.
