It will be crowded on the opener, and the deer will move back into the timber. I would key on land that is difficult to access and which cannot be reached by road or ATV. Hiking up the escarpment south of Janesville can be very good, but you will need to scout this out before the season--and without alerting every deer in the process (hard to do). The largest buck I have seen in a decade I found just north of Lake Davis two years ago. As far as I know, no one ever killed him. If you get some snow, then all bets are off. Find game trails heading off the mountains and hunt the foothills where you can find access. Perhaps the best thing you can do is be patient--even skip the opener and take some time off midweek during the last part of the season. The deer will not be plentiful, but you have a good chance of finding a 22+ inch buck if you scout well. Unfortunately, many people never explore the unit before the season, and so end just driving the roads happy to kill a forked horn. It is a tough hunt for those who live out of town, but I wish you luck and hope you will keep us posted.
