H that is a nice buck. I am going this weekend on my a zone hunt the guy that I am hunting with says there deer don't rut up until October sometime so I was wondering where you hunted at. I will be down around the Gilroy area I hope they are getting ready to rut might make things go great again nice buck Danny the turtle

RS, Another Dandy Blacktail, Congrats!

From my years hunting Blackies atop the range just East of Mt Diablo, Yes, this is the time of year when "new" bucks come in, show up, and can't seem to stay away from the Does.

Thanks Joey. Yeah, we did a lot scouting before the season and spent a lot of time in the field during the season and we've never seen this buck before. Every year, the last few days of the season new/unknown bucks start showing up. That's why I always save one tag for the last week.

Bucks up in north A zone heve been chasing does pretty hard the last few days mostly due to the rain and cool weather. Good luck to all

Thanks. Yes, this was definitely an exceptional deer season for me. Now I just hope that the luck continues into my Roosevelt hunt next month.

RS, Can we talk particulars on your buck there? Looking at the pic, several things caught my attention and so the questions.

1. The deer in our neck of the woods, back home, didn't ever field dress out over 120 pounds. Yours looks like it might have beat that mark. Did you weigh him?

2. Those are some huge ears for a Blacktail. Did you happen to measure their outside spread?

3 Finally, Because of those ears and that nice mass, i'm curious what he measured outside? My guess would be not quite 18"

What Rossie hunt? lol :)

Joey, I don't have exact answers, but I'll do my best...

1. No, I didn't weigh him. However, he was the biggest bodied buck that I've killed around here. For reference, I weigh-in between 240 and 250. Also, all of the bucks that I've seen killed around here this year have had a lot of fat on them and looked really healthy.

2. No, I didn't measure them. We do have two distinct groups of deer here, one group has the big ears and one group has the small ears.

3. Pretty close...he was right at 17".

As for the Roosevelt hunt, I was able to get a good deal on a 10 day hunt up in British Columbia. From what I've seen, it should be a great trip.
