Idaho Experience

Hey hunters,

ID results are out and my boy and I both struck out. Looking at a few units for over the counter Muley tags now. Wanted to see if there was anyone willing to share their experiences hunting in Idaho. Which units do you like? We'd like to hike and get away from roads, and enjoy the scenery while we hunt and hope to come home with some meat.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

I struck out on Idaho this year as well. Going to get Otc tags there somewhere. I've only hunted Idaho once in the salmon unit 28. Loved it there. We killed some bucks just goofing off learning the land.

I've hunted 23 a couple of times but it's not good enough to send some one there! At least the area we hunted.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-27-16 AT 00:12AM (MST)[p]I once drew the only nonresident tag (2002, I believe) in the unit that lies between Arco and Carey. I do not remember the unit number, but it was a late hunt and there were only 10 tags total. A fire had just passed through the unit and I found lots of grass, little sagebrush or other browse, and very few bucks. I did see one 3x4 that probably weighed closer to 300 than 200 pounds, but held off until the last day of the season and then he gave me the slip. Ate my tag, but had a lot of fun hunting. Unfortunately I had to give up applying to Idaho--I could not afford to purchase licenses without even earning a preference point if not drawn. I assume that is how it still works, but I honestly do not know.

Obviously, I am not a great source of info on the state, but, no matter what, it has to be better than California. Good luck.

IDFG should have all there harvest stats available on their page. There's a ton of varying terrain and habitat in the state, Pick a unit you like and stick with it. It may take a little time to figure out. Don't get caught up bouncing around "looking for the deer".

Soj51hopefull-
Looking at units it seems like the theme is the Salmon region has been overrun with wolves which I guess has a greater impact on Elk than deer.

Bullskin- yeah the price is hefty but I fully intended on hunting there wether I got drawn or not. With the youth age starting at 10 there, this was an opportunity to get my son out before he can hunt CA.

Goingdeep- we have a unit picked out now, and I've read that before about once you decide on a unit that has a good outlook, and just learning the unit well.

Good luck this year guys, thanks.

Ya I wasn't suggesting to hunt there just "sharing the Idaho experience". The elk hunting was not good where we were at but we pulled some bucks there. Nothing big but we came home with meat and had a great time. My buddies kid killed his first deer on that trip at age 10 or 11.

Pick a unit that has terrible draw odds for a late, controlled hunt but is OTC for the early season and take your son hunting.

Possibility at a great buck, and probably better kill success than other units.

Best hunt i ever took my son on was the Utah youth elk hunt cause I wasn't worried about killing anything myself.

IMO getting him excited about hunting is far more important than your success.

I don't care how big a bull/buck I kill, nothing gets me more excited than my wife, son or dad putting something on the ground.

That's what it's all about. Going out and having a good experience with my son. The game is just a reward for working hard at enjoying yourself!
Thanks for sharing guys. Good luck.

There's deer in all of the general units , just pick one that has the type of terrain that suits your style of hunting and have fun .
