OK guys im reaching out to gather some info. My son pulled this tag and id like to make the best of it. I'm not looking for specifics on spots, more of access questions. I do not plan on going up into the Warners we will be spending all of our time in the low country on the east end. Ill be up in August and September to look around and do some fishing. Ive hunted X9, X10 and X12 along with several states would be glad to pass what I know. PMs are welcomed. Good luck to all this year.

Mike

Try around Blue lake out of Likely if you want to hunt down low, Patterson camp is a good place also to hunt out of and not a bad hike into the Warners . Mahonany ridge, Emerson peak area.

Just curious why don't you wanna go high?

Over the years I've learned to find some great bucks where most people don't look and that usually consists of wide open low country that I can spend days behind the big glass.

Thousands of hunter drive past great bucks every year heading for the mountains just so they can glass from under a shade tree.

I grew up in Modoc and have backpack hunted the Warners my whole life And have taken some nice bucks over the years. There are still and always have been good bucks in the wilderness area. It is by far in my opinion the best place to kill a mature buck in x-3b. The south east side of the zone you've talked about dose lend it's self to glassing, and there is always a few nice bucks taken there every year. Just don't expect to see a lot of deer. Also there will be plenty of people down in that country so be prepared. I hope you and your boy have a great time and kill a big'un.

Thanks for all the input guys. Were heading up Wednesday for 4 days of looking around (fishing). Any last words of advice are always appreciated. Don't be shy with the fishing spots either. Good luck to all this year!

Hey guys,

My son is gonna miss the age cutoff for applying in the draw so we'll have to wait until his 12th birthday in August to get OTC tags closer to home. Considering applying myself for the X3B Archery hunt. It's an 8hr drive for me so any info you guys are willing to share to help me make up my mind would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

I am mostly familiar with the high country, which has good numbers of mature deer. It is vast and fairly rugged, but has a pretty good network of trails. The challenge for an archery hunter in August is to get your animal out before it spoils. I would not expect to take deer right off the roadways--a wilderness hunt is the only reason to visit the Warners, and you will require the better part of a day to pack in. Be sure to avoid the game refuge and get off the main trails, which may see a bit of traffic. There should be plenty of water this year, but you may need to pack it out of the drainages to camp, which will most likely be along the ridges. Treat your water for Giardia, etc. Find open ridges on the east side of the escarpment and have some fun.

That's probably a good choice. While X3B may be a good adventure, it probably wouldn't result in many good deer for a hunter unfamiliar with the area. Good luck.

Hey this is my first time posting on this forum. My dad and I got drawn for X3b this year and hunted it opening weekend. Didn?t see much besides a couple doe. My dad can't walk around to good so I go out and hike the mountains to hopefully find him a buck. Any help would be more than appreciated.
Thank you
