long time reader first time post , drew x6a rifle plan on two scouting trips.it seems that cdfw gives general info on mountain ranges on there web site although viewing them on google earth they look good .but its big country any help pointing a guy in the right direction would really b appreciative

There are good deer throughout the unit but the best will not be found in the same locations year after year. My advice is to scout it hard and learn the terrain. Perhaps you will get lucky and find a good buck in a private location that no one else has seen. If others do know about it, then you can bet you will not have it to yourself and will probably never see it after the crowd shuffles into the woods on opening morning. To start, key on water in a location that is difficult to reach on foot. If you can drive there, forget it. Then explore travel routes into and out of oak patches or mountain mahogany. For me, I almost always hunt the very steep, hilly terrain that allows me to shoot across canyons. These may be found along the escarpment along the east side of the unit. Bass Hill has also been holding some very nice bucks this summer.

thanks bullskin, the eastern slope looks real spot and stalk .is it easier to get it from the bottom or top. what do u think of lone spring mtn.,cottonwood mtn.

I have seen a few good deer in near lone spring mountain and cottonwood peak over the years, but these are fairly accessible. I would head over the side to the east, and down into the oaks that are regenerating following the Clark Incident of 1987. Give the area between Cottonwood and Janesville a look. If nothing shows, then check out the Elephant Burn south of Antelope lake. I may receive a lot of pressure, but it still draws some big animals.

Hi there been scouting x6a it started off good but its not looking so good now not sure what the problem is. But the best way for me to learn a new area is to go buy a map from your local usfs station. this map will give good road detail but no topo so I use my gps for that. From there I just drive and cover ground tell I find an area with deer. Once u found them its time to do your home work and start the foot work. Learn there habits what time they start moving in the a.m. and the p.m. and were they go in between. As far as wear to look read my post x6a scouting that should give u a little help but I have found deer all over this zone some area better than others. When u find some deer or the deer dont stop looking because your not the only person how has seen this deer find a plan b or c and if you got time get off the roads and beat some feet and put some time on glassing. Hope I could help and hope for the best.

thanks guys for more input never can get enough lol.how accessible is the eastern slope west of 395,seem like a lot of private

The escarpment is bounded at the bottom by a lot of private, but there are Forest Service roads that pass through. With a hunt off the top, you may either pull your animal back uphill (difficult, which is what makes this a good hunt) or drag him to one of these roads below.

Funny in cali you would talk about draggin a deer uphill to a road.

Cut him up. Those cali deer have small bodies, so it's easy on a relative basis.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-02-16 AT 00:41AM (MST)[p]I don't think he really means pull as in drag a buck up hill and these are Rocky Mountain mule deer which for the most part are as heavy as bucks in other states,as long as they are mature deer.

well got to scout the unit over the weekend for the first time looks like I've got my work cut out for me but than again what unit isn't,got real familiar with it though so new to this site don't know how to pm.have a couple of questions bullskin if u would all ma at 559 892 5277

I too drew...and know nothing of the unit, so I've enjoyed reading this and other threads. I'm thinking of camping at brady's camp and have a red Yamaha grizzly. Say hi if I run into you. Good luck.
