M8 Bass Hill muzzleloader tips?

Hi Folks,
I'm headed up in a few weeks for the bass hill muzzleloader hunt (M8). I hunted the area about 20 years ago during the late season (now A26). I'm sure things have changed and will be going up several days early to scout. Any tips or advice? Anyone know friendly ranchers that will let a father/son hunt their land? I recall a lot of big bucks but on private land. Thanks in advance!
Ryan

Hey Rybo, There are bucks on the public ground but they are getting hunted hard right now with rifles. That season is early but can be good towards the end. With Landowners just start knocking on doors, if you do that for a day someone will let you on. Doesn't hurt to ask. Also look down towards Milford. Some decent spots out there on the Lassen county side where its open enough to see. You both have tags? Good luck

Thanks Ryno... we drew as a party with points. Hoping for some snow by then. I know it's a game changer. I know we will end up knocking on some doors and hoping for the best. I know a few ranchers charge $$ i can't afford, but we may get lucky. I'll look into the Milford recommendation for sure.

Thank you!

Will do. You are a couple of weeks after my hunt ends.

Hunt Bass Hill if you don't have private access.

Saw a couple of nice bucks while quail hunting Saturday. Son and I saw 250+ quail Sat, I got into another 175 Sun, but no bucks. But watching dogs point isn't conducive to seeing big mule deer bucks moving out 500 yards in front of you.

Don't be fooled into thinking those bucks will come flying off the mountain with a lot of snow. I had the Doyle hunt last year and killed my buck on Thanksgiving Day up on top of the mountain. It snowed a good amount before the hunt and again quite a bit during my hunt. My buck was with a doe and a spike and was super content chasing her through the deep snow. IMO those deer will move down with the snow, but it doesn't happen overnight. Here are a couple of picts the day before I killed my buck. It snowed even more after these picts.

Gollywomper,

I have the Doyle tag this year and have been scouting the last 3 weeks. I am south of your hunt area so I won't be of much help to you but what I have noticed in M3 is that I am seeing more and more deer each time I go up scouting...

Bwht4x4 sent you a PM re Doyle.

Good luck on your hunt guys!

Well gents...

We had a hot hunt. We got onto some nice local valley bucks a couple of times, but they really liked private land. We got some great shots (photos) of really awesome bucks on private land...literally laying in the front lawn of peoples homes. Ultimately, I shot a freezer buck off of Bass Hill, and my dad shot a respectable 4x3 on the last hour of the season. On the last day, it snowed decent on the pass. The day after the snow and the season close we saw several very nice bucks that had not been around during the entire 70 degree week (or were doing a really good job of staying hidden.) Great time, great hunt with dad, a ton of coyotes, quail and deer. You A26 folks are gonna have a heck of a hunt!!!!!!

That's what I like to hear!!!!! 11 years of waiting and now I'm down to a handful of days. Can hardly wait. Honestly I have not been this excited since I was 12 yr old waiting in my first deer hunt.
All reports I have been hearing are good.
