Unless your fixin to keel over soon I would hold onto the dream. X5B is not what it used to be, anyway, and if you don't know the area well you will probably go home with a forked horn.

You know the Garden...stick with it. A second choice would be Doyle. Don't even consider Goodale!!!

There not my points but if you really wanted to hunt this year and you could hunt the whole season I would have no problem with X5b.
I realize its not what it used to be but there are some really BIG bucks up there and since they have been reducing the tag numbers that should give them a chance to grow.

5b also has the best success rate of the state 2 years in a row muzzy. I dont think you could go wrong with either hunt, but it seems as if weather has more effect of the outcome in the garden , in 5 there is still alot of country that will not get hunted, along with only 5 tags probably cant be a better situation for being in the best bucks of the unit with no one but you to hunt them.soon my wife, brother and I with max pt could hunt that unit 3 years in a row. Is the best buck in the garden better than the best one in 5, do better bucks move in from oregon, or from nevada. there isnt any units up there in any state that is what it used to be and will you shoot a 160+ buck or will you go to the end for a 190+ or tag soup. there is to me quit a difference between a fun hunt and a trophy hunt,to me it matters where I am hunting that makes a choice of what I would pass on or take including the state, my home state of ca. is more of a fun hunt catagory, and being alone in m5 is hard to ignore.

Wild fin, I can't imagine why anyone would draw a premium tag and be happy with a 160" class buck. If you're not going to hunt for a big buck on one of these tags, why bother applying for these tags to begin with?

caelk when you dont have any boundries in the west were you hunt mule deer how high do you place ca. in your priority, that is the only reason I have max pts, would I go to shoot a 160+ certainly not, will I ever use my pts in ca. mayby not,It will be a fill in hunt at best and I am sure I will be happy with it.as far as m9-m5 I know of 2 tag holders In the last 3 years in m9 that live there, and it seems that the monster bucks may only be ghosts from the past except for a few,m5 is where I have seen bucks pushing the 200 level and not lately,I would prefer to find the deer I want then get the tag when ready.I will have 2 ca. deer tags for A zone and will be meat hunting in july and august and will really be happy with it and they do not interfere muley hunting the west, good luck

These are my two best C zone bucks I'm ? to top em...n by the way I was wrong I have 13 bp's

Well that changes everything! If your 1 point shy of max then go for the x zone. I have a friend in the same boat that always puts in for g37. I tell him to burn his points on a good hunt then start putting back in g37 to build points and hope for the off chance of pulling a random.

I can't imagine why anybody would care what someone else wants to shoot or use thier points on. Most people hunt thier entire life in california and never shoot a 160+ buck. If someone wants to burn max points on a 160 buck and it's their biggest california buck, good for them!!

Sorry I can't help you with you question.
Although my dad and uncle hunted all there lives and neither one of them killed a 160+ buck. As for that, I have never killed a 160+ buck and I am 53. My uncle told me that every buck he has ever killed was a trophy to him. If I kill a 160+ I will be very happy. "Trophy is in the eyes of the beholder". Of course I want a 190+ but I like the meat too just like my good ole boys did.

I've eaten all my trophies n the forks....all tastes the same to me...

I spend 20-30 days in 5B every year, 2nd week of Oct, through Jan. There are good bucks there but finding them in Oct is tough.

Buck I see in late Nov through end of Jan are VERY hard to find during the season.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-17 AT 08:33PM (MST)[p]I hunted 5b a few years ago, the year it burned up. During the season it was easy to see 25-30 bucks a day as they were concentrated on a few Mtns. Only problem was, we only saw one big buck. 28" or better. We did see several 24-25" bucks and I ended up killing a 24" buck on the last day. Not what I was hoping for. We did see hunters kill small forkies and they were fine with that. Not what I wanted. It was a blast to hunt and see so many bucks, but disappointing to not see more toads. I walked all over that zone and on almost every Mtn in it. Then we went for a ride there in late November and could not believe how many nice bucks showed up. They migrate in from the west and the north. The past few seasons I've heard of a few nice ones being killed and every year they will kill a few. They are not behind every bush though.

Great bucks you've taken!!!!!

As you know, there's great bucks in every zone in CA, the crux is putting out the effort to find em and being picky.......

14 BP is a bad place to be. On first glance at the odds, it looks like 4 years to clear the top pool... but add in those jumping off Goodale and points only people jumping in, it will probably be much longer. Until then, -1 is as good as 0 points.

Yep, this is exactly my problem! Missed a draw way back before the online application process and wasn't home (out of state for work) to apply. Elk will be a longer wait unless I get lucky, antelope I should draw an archery tag, sheep, well, luck will really need to be on my side........

I wish our point structure in regards to the draw was more like Nevada's
