I recently purchased a .270 win I am getting the gun all setup mounting a vortex HS 4-16x44 with talley rings and thinking about what ammunition I will be using with this setup. I should be drawing a general season tag in Utah as well as a x zone cali tag. Both hunts will be within couple week period. My question is should I zero this gun in with a non lead ammunition if so what ammunition do you recommend. The only non lead ammo I have experience with is for my muzzleloader I used a Barnes bullet.Thank you for the help

We've had excellent accuracy and terminal performance with the Barnes TTSX in 130 grain. No reason to use anything else, though if you're going to go with a lead bullet, a Nosler Partition is awfully hard to beat.

I would try a box with the Barnes TSX or the hornady GMX I shoot a .280 ai that I built just for copper and the 140 TSX shot better than anything else I know your running a .270 but that's all I can offer you right now I shot a deer last year in Utah and it was a through and through with placement being key to the kill not much of an exit hole I would stay ahead of the curve and get ready to just shoot copper. I would also be prepared to get a good clean after 5-10 shots my groups fall off fast after about 10 rounds of copper and I have a very good barrel.

^^^This is not correct^^^

The regulation phases-in the requirement to use certified nonlead ammunition depending on where and what you are hunting. The first phase begins July 1, 2015, and requires use of nonlead ammunition when hunting on all CDFW properties and for all 2015 bighorn sheep hunts. Effective July 1, 2016, hunters using shotguns will be required to use certified nonlead ammunition to take upland game species (except for dove, quail, snipe, and any species taken on licensed game bird clubs), fur-bearing and nongame species, and any species taken under the authority of a depredation permit. Shotgun ammunition containing pellets composed of materials approved as nontoxic by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as identified in Title 14 Section 507.1, is considered certified. Effective July 1, 2019, the use of certified nonlead ammunition will be required statewide when taking any wildlife. The new regulation does not modify the existing requirements to use certified nonlead ammunition when taking big game and nongame within the California condor range.

I've had the same experience with the Barnes bullets, very accurate initially but if you don't clean regularly accuracy falls off quickly. Same for 7mm-08, 280 and 338.

Great results on elk, have used a more fragile bullet for deer/antelope. Guess it'll be Barnes in Kali in the future.

been using a 110 grn triple shock for maybe 15 years now and it always works well even outside 300 yrds I dont use that gun for elk just pig, deer, antelope.

If the x zone that you will be hunting doesn't require copper because it's outside of the condor area I would stick with regular lead bullets. If you have to use lead I would go with hornady gmx superformance. The problem that me and my hunting buddies have had with copper bullets is it's just like they poke through them and don't mushroom very well. I have heard that copper is hard to beat on though thick skinned game like elk, but for deer and bear up to 275lbs like we've taken, expect a follow up shot

I tried the Barnes X bullets way back when they first came out, 130 Grain in my Win. 270, they worked great, killed several deer. They opened up stayed together and I think I recovered most all of them on the off side, Back when they came out, they sold them cheap!

I handload, but the most accurate lead free bullet load that I have tried in my .270 is a 130 grain Nosler Etip and 60 gr RL22. I haven't found a consistent reliable sub moa load in my gun with the Hornday or Barnes lead free bullets I have tried, but maybe your gun is different.

My gun loves factory Hornady GMX. Of course at that price I can't afford to sight in every year.
