LAST EDITED ON Jun-14-17 AT 11:42AM (MST)[p]I was lucky and pulled an x2 rifle tag this year. I have been in the unit many times helping hunters out that drew the muzzy tag in there. I love that hunt. So i know exactly where to go come Nov but am a little bit lost on the early season. I was hoping someone out there who knows it well or even better someone who has hunted in the last few years could give my some pointers. I know a lot of the deer are up by the burn but i really have never been up there. The deer come Nov are much farther south. I have helped a lot of guys on here with hunts before just hoping someone could return the favor. Thanks. Aaron

i had the same problem, i'm only 90 miles from the garden so i will be getting to know it better, i burned my points for this hunt got tired of waiting for m9...

I have an X2 tag as well. 8 pts did it. Have shot lots of honkers in there, but never deer hunted it. Any of you guys with tags are welcome to stop in for a beer.....I'll know in a month where we camp.

Good luck!

saw a nice buck in there on friday and 2 more on sunday near blue mtn, I have the elk tag rifle, sure did not see much of elk and sure would have thought to see more deer but it was real hot. I did see deer from goose lake to clear lake, seems like near clear lake would be your best chance to glass alot of area and once you move farther in glassing is out , you could sit water but it is every 500 hundred yards or less no matter where you go. good luck and if you see elk on your scouting it would be nice to know, my season starts sept. 13

Had the tag last year and was prepared to stay the whole season. Camped by Blue Mountain. Had snow and rain for the first 3 days but really didn't help. Dry and warm after that. Harvested a nice 6x5 on the 10 day about 25-1/2 inches wide. My 2 sons were with me which made it even more special. You got your work cut out for you. No slam dunk. Lot of great areas to look at . If I were to do it again, I would go into the Timber more and try to flush one out. Yes the burn area is massive but didn't really see a lot. Get up early and get set up for first light. Should be a great year with all the moisture and good luck

I had a friend show me a monster that came out of that unit last year. Close to the magic 30" and his body was huge. That unit is becoming a great unit again with large busks taken each year.

Good luck and send some pictures of any bucks you get.

I have fourteen points and I am holding out for G-39 no matter how long it takes.

Had the tag a couple years back, rain and cold the first few days. Deer seemed to be moving towards the south side of the unit as the season moved along. Took a 4x4 the last day on deer hill ironically. Did see a decent 5x5 close to the burn in the middle of the unit around day 3 or 4. Looking back should have shot him but that is the gamble you always play.

For the elk hunter, we saw elk way up in the north east corner of the unit north east of Weed Meadow, right near east the boundary and Oregon border. A bull and a few cows. Saw gobs of elk sign around water near Deer Hill, but I had the tag at the peak of the drought, I am sure there is water everywhere now.

thanks for info on elk, there is a large fire in the garden, and there is 2 deer hills, one in the north east and one farther south and west near the 139
