north east elk

I dont think that I have hunted a unit as large as the north east rifle elk, they get elk 90 miles apart from north to south and it is 80 miles from east to west.it will be a lot of work to zero in on an area to make a stand and hunt with out trying to go all over the unit. my wife drew likely tables ant. so I can get a chance to scout a bit and I will spend a week in the unit before the season starts. It seems that any unit that I have hunted in many states you can usually see the other side not here, hope to have a great first and last ca. elk hunt.

I have never hunted it, and elk aren't really my deal, but I have seen a lot of sign in the Bartle area. I am not sure where the access points are any more--apparently SP has closed roads, if not their entire property in the area to hunting by any except SP employees. If you have any hunting contacts in the Burney area, give them a call.

fin.......the elk are scattered all over the N/E unit. The areas of concentration have rather disbursed out. not sure how far away you live........but you may want to combine your wife's lope scouting with your elk scouting. Hint, hint.

If you're interested in guided, a buddy of mine found a shed with a 60" beam on the ranch he guides for.

thank you for your replies, I will not be going with a guide and am not totally unfamiliar with some of the areas, but I live in dana point ca. and could find a white shark in about 2 minutes from my house and 12 hour from devils garden. I do know of a bull killed near burney and one killed near the oregon border and a recent road kill in x5b, so it is definitely a playing field I wont be using much of, you always want to start in the right spot but with rutting bulls roaming far and wide with tons of water will make me look for the best feed.I will be able to scout some before my wifes hunt and during, and up to 10 days before the season and the hole season.I will narrow my initial areas to north and south warner mtn and north east and south west garden and if I try to hunt those 4 locations,I most likely wont hunt either very well, so at some point I need to chose and just enjoy the chance to chase elk in the rut with a rifle for a change.thankyou

I don't know how much public land is in this area but I have seen elk crossing the road several times just south of what we call "4 corners." The intersection of 89 and 299.

Doesn't look like the elk country I'm used to but I see em there.

With this wet winter you should have great horn growth and spread out elk, blessings and curse.
