B Zone

Hi everyone, I was one of the unfortunate ones that drew my 3rd choice this year. Years ago I hunted B3 with only one legal buck seen, I was able to harvest this nice 4x4. It was quite a few years ago though. I now live closer to B2 and it has a lot better harvest statistics. I am wondering if anyone out there has any pointers for me in B2. I am not afraid to to put the hiking boots on but probably won't have the time to head into the Marbles or Alps. Any help would be very much appreciated. I know how valuable hunting spots are, so I am just looking for vacinities, (bad spelling)
Thank you all.

Mobertok,
I am only familiar with B's general unit. I have a ranch there and also spend a lot of time hunting the public land. I can tell you that once it gets hot the bucks go to high elevations and timber up. Your best bet is to hold out until the last two weeks of the season when the rain, fog and colder weather draws them lower and into the open. It is very rare that they even started to pre rut before the close of the season unlike the A zone bucks but the colder weather does help your odds of bagging a mature buck. Hope this helps a little

B2....I've killed a bunch of bucks over the years in B2. All around Indian Valley west of Hayfork. Friend Mountain, Bear Wallow, Grouse Prairie, Hayfork Bally, etc. No bad spots really. Blacktail bucks are like gold nuggets. You find them where you find them.

Try to find recent burn areas. That's where the deer concentrations will be, if there is such a thing now days. :)

Outside of the Wilderness areas, don't plan on hiking much as there are roads everywhere. Just take 1/4 mile walk hunts if the ground looks good.

As mentioned, if it rains, drop whatever you're doing and get out there! Your odds increase 10 fold.

And whatever you do stay away from Trinity Pines. There are marijuana grows every 1/4 mile. It's private but a lot of public around too.

Thank you guys s lot, at least that gets me started in a direction and confirming the high timber bucks in hot weather.

And really listen to what egrass said! Stay away from Trinity Pines. I came back 36 on Tues and the grows are everywhere in that area (and Hayfork). The growers get real froggy about strangers around their dope. The closer to harvest time, the worst (more protective) they get and their dogs, mostly pit bulls are running loose. October is about the peak of harvest time, which doesn't help the hunting.

Good luck.

I have had some excellent luck walking in behind locked Sierra Pacific gates on Hayfork Summit and Hoosimbim Mt. Plan on long easy hikes on logging roads. As stated above, burn areas and clear cuts will hold deer. There are some really good genetics in the Hayfork area and older deer will have great horns.

I've also had some luck hunting SPI ground behind locked gates north of Trinity Center on the west side of Hwy 3.

Good luck!
