Hi All- I've never hunted this area. I have driven through it on my way to x12 once or twice. I am planning to take my wife on a couple day trip to either Lone Pine or Independence primarily to look at deer...but also to get out for a few days with my wife. I'd like to go before the hunt starts so end of November is what I'm looking at. We will primarily drive roads as my wife is not the get out and hike type (she can a bit but not miles over steeper terrain). Are there some nice restaurants/hotels in the area? Are there any other cool things to see within an hours drive to check out and make the trip that much better? Any info would be great. I just wanna go look at deer. :)

Hey Steve,

No need to hike much to see bucks/deer. If you get there after Thanksgiving, just take the road to Onion Valley, glass off both sides once you reach the base of the mountains, there are usually plenty to see from the main road, also several good dirt roads that run off of Baseline road(parallels the base of the mountains) I would say it is worth driving up to see the Bristle cone pines, and you can also maybe see some Tule elk near 395 down just above Lone Pine, several others on MM probably know other options but it is worth the trip! We will probably see you up there!

Hey Devon- Thanks for the info. Do you or someone you know have a tag? Or will you be up there for the same reason?

I have stayed in Independence at the MT Williamson motel, clean nice little cabin like rooms. As for the food the best place is called still life cafe, very good food and cool little place.talked to a guy that said the taco shop at old gas station was good as well. You will see plenty of deer from your truck, everywhere you go you will see them easiest place would be onion valley road goes out right behind the motel.

West out of Bishop you can drive almost to the top that will take ya into coyote basin area.
