Guys did poorly and word got out to all. Next year it will probably be drawn with 1 less than max points. ?

Ha ha just kiddin ya.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-16-17 AT 06:47PM (MST)[p]Seriously...I have seen photos of a couple bucks that came out there, and they weren't all that impressive. WAAAAAY less than max point type bucks! Kinda think it was a bit tough this year.

I know I must sound like a broken record, but the feral horse situation up there is really messing with the deer and antelope!

I talked to a friend who hunted it this year, didn't pull the trigger. Saw only two really good ones by their standards out of maybe 60-70 bucks seen in ten days and couldn't get a shot on either.

was that the muzz hunt...? sounds like the rifle hunt....

I'm kind of luaghing at some of these responses. I was up there with 3 friends who had the tag. All I can say is u guys have some bad info. It will probably go down as the best year in a long time up there. If u could not find a good deer up there then u should hang up Hunting mule deer. I did not shoot any of the deer so I will not post them. I just played guide for fun. I would say half the tag holders shot a really good buck anywhere. Never saw any mega deer but stuff alot of guys would have given alot to kill in Colorado on a 3rd season tag in most units.

^^^Pics or it didn't happen^^^ LOL!

Not saying there were no dandy's taken. I have seen photos of some dang nice bucks...but have not seen, or heard of, one single max point type deer that the zone has produced in the past. Did I mention the feral horses??? LOL!

Yes ur right I did not see any 200 inch deer killed. But there usually is never 200 inch deer killed there. I know the place well. I know what kind of deer are killed and what is a reasonable goal up there. I have personally seen 200 inch deer there but they are a seriously rare animal. Lots of people say they see them but that's just because they don't know what a true 200 inch buck looks like. In my opinion anything that breaks 180 inches in CA is a huge deer. That's a good deer anywhere in my opinion. It would be interesting to actually see how many deer in all the x zones killed every year actually break 180. I bet the number is crazy low. If u have that tag u can actually hunt 170 to up to 200 inch buck. There is no other place in CA that I know of that offers u that. Maybe some private ranch or plm tag. For a draw tag it's the only place that gives u a shot if u know what ur doing and where to look. It's a very Weather related hunt. If u get snow and rain with a good season date u never know what might step out. I don't know what a max point deer is supposed to look like I guess. If u told 99 percent of the max point holders they could shoot a 175 185 or even a chance at a 190s that is 25 inches to 33 inches wide in CA they would be all over it. If I had the golden opportunity tag then yes I would definitely hold out for the magical 200 mark and u still might eat ur tag. Yes the dam horses must DIE! They ruin tons of habitat. Did I mention the horses must DIE! Lol

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-17 AT 08:38AM (MST)[p]No other tag offers 170+ bucks? You need to get out a little more. 170-190+ deer are killed on the general hunts every year.

I did not say they did not offer them they are killed in very small numbers. Where can u go and half the tag holders get one. The awnser is no where is CA. I would say the number of true 180 plus deer killed in regular season x zones is extremely small. I betting alot of them don't produce even 1. Some obviously do. It's the exception not the norm. Sure there is always the one guy who puts massive time in and lives breathes sleeps big deer that might kill a few. I'm just talking in general. Even a unit like x 5b that everyone loves is hard to break 180. There is alot of good bucks killed and some break 30 inches wide but most do not score well. They are still great deer. But in all reality the big ones u see from there r 150 to 160 to 170 bucks. They r still great deer but most don't score well. Big deer can come from anywhere obviously. I'm just talking where is half the tags in any unit gonna kill a big deer in CA with a chance at a giant.

I'm done talking about it last post for me. If u truly want a big deer u should probably draw Goodale or Doyle with ur max points. There are definitely alot of 180 plus deer running around there. I would hold out for at least that. It is max points after all.

Gooddale is a has been from what I have seen killed out of m-9 the last 3 years there's no if's ands or butts about it.

>Aaron buddy, when's the last time
>you hunted Goodale?

Goodale has sucked for years now. They have killed very few monsters out there during the past few seasons. All you have do is search this and other forums and you will see the quality of the deer (or lack thereof). Ya, i would be happy to hunt it, but it's not worth waiting 15+ years for.

Nope goodale is the best just look how hard it is to draw with max points. Keep sending for it. It's the dream. Keep going for it.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-17 AT 02:38PM (MST)[p]It was the muzz hunt. Honestly, I think expectations were too high. It sounds like passed on 170ish bucks.

I agree with Aaron, after hunting M-9 in 2014 I would suggest everyone with max points put in for Gooddale.

Anyone who has hunted Goodale the last 5 years knows its a joke
Has there been a buck killed over 175" the last few years? Think not. I wasted my max points and should have hunted one of the better X zones or Anderson Flat.

That last post actually made me laugh pretty hard. That was pretty dang funny. I don't post pics unless there mine plus I have been burned a few times on this site. I try and post stuff I have killed or friends have and people post negative stuff. I have learned my lesson. Maybe some day I will try again. I still enjoy this site just am very careful on what gets posted. Kind of sucks but because of a select few it ruins it for the rest of us. None of them were over 200 so they are not worth looking at. After all this site is called monster muleys.haha

i hate to agree but yes ur right, i just have this addiction to big racks n no pun intended

As one of the M9 tag holders I thought I'd chime in. I hunted 9 days looking for a trophy. I covered from the Oregon border to the very South end of the unit, lots of boot work as well as covering the road network. The deer were scattered from North to South, but mostly in the Southern 2/3 thirds of the unit. I also spent 4 days during the latter part of the rifle season re-aquainting my self with the unit. I had received some photos of some nice bucks taken during the early season and had great expectations. Lots of smaller bucks were available usually hanging with a few does, trophy quality seemed nonexistent. After the 6" snow fall on Friday night the deer were much easier to locate and on the 9th. day I took a 27 in buck that showed while I was glassing some deer bedded in the snow. It was, by far the best buck I'd seen near or far. Others who saw the buck also said it was the largest they had seen taken. I would have liked to stay until the season ended, however; I was exhausted and had a trip to Montana planned. I had dreams of a wall hanger but...I put in the time and was satisfied regardless. sourkraut

Going by what I've seen and heard, and by the additional "please don't share these" photos I've been sent....I would say you have plenty of company. In fact, it sounds like you may have done better than quite a few(if not most). Pretty crappy year in that part of the state this year.

I'm glad u got one you are satisfied with. Plus u killed the best one you saw and that does not always happen. The hunt can definitely be frustrating at times. After Hunting it many times for fun there can be a steep learning curve on the hunt. For example there are a couple areas in that hunt were there are tons of does but hardly any bucks let alone a big one. To me it makes no sense but year after year it holds true. It's hard not to waste ur time there because of all the deer you see. The better ones seem to show up in small little areas year after year. I still say it was one of the best years in awhile up there. The average buck killed was up. My group of friends killed a 32 a 29 and a 28 inches wide. Awesome guy camped next to us also killed a good deer that was 32 wide. Most bucks had extra points to. None of them made 200 so again they are not worth posting. Haha. I agree I did not see any 200 inch monsters killed this year. Best I seen was mid 190s. In all reality most years there is not 200 inch deer killed. Some years there will be a couple giants killed but did not see that this year. We are in California. I'm gonna say it again hold out for Goodale if u want a monster. That is the best hunt in CA ?
