G6 Kern River Buck Tag

I drew a G6 tag this year and been doing some research.

I live up near Modesto so I normally hunt D3-5 and D6. Never hunted D8 before so I've been on google maps and searching the forums.

Looks like most guys prefer to focus on the northern end of the unit, as its closer to the Golden Trout where the big boys come out of.

Seen some say focus off of sherman pass road and a few guys even said the Greenhorn area produces a lot of deer. (I believe it burned in 2016)

Any general tips from those with experience in the area are appreciated. I'll be camping there fourth of july weekend to familiarize myself with the area, with an additional scouting trip after D8 closes.

Hey HogBone I have a buddy that helped a mutual friend of ours on that hunt last season. The guy ended up with the his best buck to date. I'll try and pick his brain for some info if I can and send you a pm. With what I can dig up. Just be a little patient cause he's old school and doesn't do much phone chattin so I'll have to pay him a visit.

How many points did you draw with ? And why don't you buy a d8 tag as your second tag and go hunt the general season so you can hunt and learn the lay of the land. All I know about the hunt is pray for snow .

I guess the biggest thing is what type of buck are you looking. It will not be hard to find a buck during that time frame. Finding a 160-180 type buck in that unit will be very very hard. I live by there and have had friends with the tag its not easy finding a quality buck. If you truly want to make the most of it this is what I would do.
1. Start getting my vacation days ready. Plan on really enjoying the hunt. Plan for 4-5 days of just scouting before the season opens. You have the Kern River with great fishing that you should take advantage of. Plus there are some great places to eat/drink around the area.
2. Dont shoot the 1st buck unless its one that is really big. Enjoy the days in the field. Pass up as many as you can.
3. Hope for snow - not much you can do about it but it will help if there is snow
4. Have a 4*4 or quad. lots of side roads to explore
5. Plan to hunt the whole season - its worth it
6. Get a group of buddies/family that can enjoy the trip with you. Even if they are coming just for a few days. Spread them out
7. Have someone if possible video/camera the hunt. Have them practice a little with the equipment. Nothing like being able to look back on a great video and pics of the hunt
8. There is some open country so practice shooting up to 500 yards if you feel like it
9. Get in shape. Even though its a rut hunt, there might be some areas that require you to walk a little
10. Any area around Peppermint, dry meadow, johnson dale, and even lower can have bucks that time of year

14. X5b conflicts with my work schedule every year and I would never draw Goodall or Round Valley. I may get a D8 tag too.

I realize a 160+ buck is unlikely, I'm just looking for something heavy and outside the ears.
