My Cache Creek cow elk hunt begins in two weeks. I am curious to know if the elk have changed their regular pattern following the fires. Has anyone been through the area lately that can offer a report? I would appreciate any new information, and thanks in advance.

I used to hunt on the west side and so went down in August to learn my way around the eastern (new?) part of the unit and look for animals. I mostly saw a lot of smoke and vehicles, but was relieved to see that the fire stayed north of 20. I guess my question now is whether the elk on Cache Creek have moved out and into the burn. If so, then that will complicate things. This rain and new grass will not help in that regard.

I don't know anything about the elk hunt, but best of luck to you! They did get a fair amount of rain. That will diminish the fire danger to a degree unless it turns hot again.:) Sounds like a fun hunt.

Well, Cache Creek paid off on opening day. I knew I would find elk in the unit-the only question was how far I would have to pack. As it turns out, I hunted the piece north of highway 20 just west of the Redbud trail head--and I have to thank the RMEF for providing that access point. A DFG biologist (thanks Josh) clued me in to this, and I was in elk within ten minutes of leaving my vehicle. In fact, I even returned to speak with a guy at the gravel pit just to make sure I was not on private property before heading back in to shoot a nice cow. It was clear that the elk spent a lot of time in this area. There were, perhaps, fifteen elk altogether (one collared cow) and the biggest bull had six points to a side. He didn't look like much compared to a Rocky Mountain elk, but I would guess that he was a great Tule bull. The best part was easy access to the stream for clean-up and a pack of less than one mile. The best of luck to the apprentice and bull tag holders. Give this place a look!

I was walking up that paved road opening day last year and watched 30 cow down in the cottonwoods never saw a bull with them then I glassed two bulls up on the south side half way back to red bud and we took off over there and I got one of the 5 bulls.Packing mine down I saw a few of the elk on the north side and ther was the bull he looked pretty good so I didn't stare to long not wanting to second guess my decision on the bull I had shot.
