X3b California mule deer

Hey guys, fist post of this forum. My dad and I got draw for X3b this year! We hunted opening weekend and didn't see much. My dad can't walk around to good and I really want him to get a decent deer. I hiked my butt off in areas that looked good and spotted a couple doe. No bucks yet but I'll stay optimistic. If anyone can help me out or at least point me in the right direction that would be awesome. Headed up there this Friday and plan to just keep hiking it out

I really like the owl creek drainage. I guess it's probably two or three miles in from the horse camp, but there is good water and feed, and I always find some nice bucks there in the summer time. They get pushed down the escarpment a bit during rifle season, but most folks won't go down after them.

I used to spend a considerable amount of time in the Warners on horseback. Up and into the mid 90's their was a significant number of deer including impressive numbers of good bucks. The winter of 91 ( if I remember correctly) hit them hard. Numbers of mature bucks remained high for a couple of years but there was another huge die off. I was told it was blue tongue. Haven't been in those parts for years now.
That said, I would attempt to get access to some of the lower ground on the basin side of the range such as the fields around Eagleville. I say this because you stated your Pop is not so mobile these days. Owl Basin used to hold some smok'n bucks but it is steep and rugged.
