I didn't draw squat but even better my Brother pulled a Great tag. I'm happier he drew than me getting it. Prime Rut, Great Genetics, and extended range as we are typically bow guys. HF says the wilderness is best.....hope they're wrong as no funds for outfitter plus not our style. Have a good Freind in Elko very willing to help but wanted to reach out to the brain trust at MM. Thx in advance for any help guys. Jim

From what i've seen in that unit the wilderness is the way to go. Gets very crowded outside the wilderness area during the rifle seasons. Maybe not so bad during the muzzy hunt. I have the same bull tag. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR HUNT!!

Thx 43, early in researching my brothers tag. How did you do on your hunt? We must find areas without a lot of other hunters somehow. Takes so much away from the experience.

A great tag to have. Wish I had it. Look at your map for areas with no roads in between roads. Walk in. fatrooster.

Congrats! I had that unit for mid rifle in 2011, the rifle hunt included 72 & 74, does your hunt also include 74? I hunted in 74 as I didn't have funds for a packed in hunt in the Wilderness area. Let me know if it does and I will tell you what I found, I also have some people that I know that hunted it in ML season and I thing they hunted in 74

Thx so much guys for the feedback....were still on cloud 9 . Yes ,Fatrooster , that been our method for years. I get all the 7.5 min maps and trace road system they show and then road test it to see how accurate maps are, then find spots that can be accessed away from roads . Things change drastically for the better even getting into areas a mile from existing roads. And Devo Thx for your offer of help. I'm 99% sure the tag includes 072,073,and 074 but I need to verify that. Another poster stated that it get a bit crowded so quite possibly I'm missing some thing as 80 tags spread over those 3 units seems to be limited pressure. Please share what I'm overlooking

When I went on Mid rifle it was not crowded where we were hunting, only saw one other hunter in the area we mainly hunted, when we drove over to the 72 side a lot of people are camped along the base of the mountain, mostly because it is as close as you can drive to the wilderness area I would guess, and if you plan on day hiking in I could see it being crowded as everyone else with out horses will be concentrated along the edge and using the main trails to get in?? We didn't hunt there so I am only guessing, I can find my maps and let you know where we were at. Give me a PM once you have the maps and we can talk congrats again!

I have that rifle tag this year, and I am pretty excited too. Thinking about trying to get in to the wilderness a ways. Does anybody know of a person that might be able to help with packing a bull out?

A buddy of mine hunted muzzy there last year w/a guide. They had horses inside the wilderness. He said it would have been super tough without horses due to how far in they were hunting and the elk tended to move around a lot from 1 day to the next. He said they were rutting hard and it was a super fun hunt. He ended up with a mediocre bull but one of the guys in their group got a monster. It sounded like they ran into a couple other hunters without horses that were having a tougher time.

On the 72/74 muzzy hunt, would you hunt the first or second week if you could only hunt one or the other? I am thinking about hunting the last 8 days.

My Dad and I are going unguided. We just prefer it that way, and I can't afford going guided anyway.

However, I had no idea the guides in the area would be as unreasonable as they have been when it comes to prices to pack a bull out or maybe pack a small amount of gear in for a primitive camp. I had one guide tell me his price would start at $2,500 to pack a single bull out, and that the bull would have to be down on the trail already. He also said this would be if he could find the time (no commitment). This is when he has stock in the area.

A minimum of $2,500 to pack a bull out that is down on the trail when he already has horses and a camp in the area!!! They are just trying to force me in to going guided, but it's not gonna happen.

I will get something figured out, but I unfortunately don't have any contacts in the area, so it will make it a little tougher.

Sorry if this response ends up getting posted twice.

If Hunting and Angling Ended
There is no alternative funding system
in place to replace the potential lost
funds for conservation. If hunting and
angling end, funding for wildlife
conservation, including enforcement of
all wildlife laws, will be jeopardized.
Hunters, anglers and shooters actively
support wildlife conservation through
tangible actions such as buying licenses
and paying taxes on hunting, fishing and
shooting equipment. Why are hunters and
anglers so willing to support
conservation through their pocketbooks?
Because people place added value on ?
and are willing to pay for ? what they
can use.

I did Archery hunt in 71 last year. Got great info from some good people on this site. It was my first time in that area and learned a lot about Coon Summit. I was quoted 500 from a Cowboy up there at one of the ranches. The issue is...from the Game Wardens/Law if you will is that some may not be "Licensed" guide so the person who helps you has to be careful and have a good story if questioned.
I put in 6 days on Coon Summit, Coon Creek area so if you'd like some some input, I can help a little and share what I'd do next time I'm up there different than first time.
- Go a day or two early to get acclimated and go early to scout if you can. B
- Be flexible as the herds are on the move/migration/pushed/etc.
- Hunt 1/3 up or 1/3 down Mt.
- PM me for phone number and I'll share my experience. Keep in mind I am beginner and did Archery last year for the first time. Beautiful country and there are Elk in them there hills!

Did you check out how much they charge for a guided hunt. I was pretty amazed at how much my buddy paid. Guides in other parts of the state don't seem to charge near as much but maybe that's because they often pack in on this particular hunt?

There are Cowboys and there are guides. The price for pack out is negotiable and availability. If a guide is successful with his clients and packing out their game/meat then he's not available to pack out for non clients. I would try to have 2 or 3 Guides/Cowboys that you can call in the event you take down an elk. I'm in the process of looking for just this for area 114/115. Call the businesses that sell Hay, Feed, Tackle, Gun Shops, archery clubs, restaurants, then boarding stables, ranches, etc. You'll find something by asking. I found one so far doing just these things. Good luck. Please share with me what you find for the next time I draw that area. Thanks, Matt

Guided hunts were like 7-8 k for 5-6 day hunt. Too expensive.

Thanks for the tips on where to look for help. Those are good pointers.

Thanks,
