My Dad and I will be hunting 072-074 early rifle bull elk this year. He is 63, and I am 40. Our plan is to camp inside the Jarbidge Wilderness. We will be doing this DIY with the exception of someone to pack the elk out and maybe someone to pack us in.
We have our sights set pretty high in terms of killing a big bull, but at the same time we want to enjoy the experience and not come away disappointed because our bulls don't score xxx number of inches.
This will be the highest quality elk hunt my Dad will ever go on in his life, and it may be the best hunt I ever go on too. As such, we are both already working on our conditioning and started the intense research and information gathering. I have talked to the biologist, warden, and others. In addition, I have spent probably 20 hours studying google earth and the Forest Service map that covers this area. I am up to speed on all the trailheads, drainages, and most of the best looking glassing locations. We will also be headed over at least once this summer for a multi day scouting trip (about a 12 hour one way drive). With that said, I know I still have a lot of work to do.
If you have rifle hunted this unit or wilderness in the past year or two, I would dearly love to be able to talk to you. This is a once in a life time opportunity, and I really want to do what I can to make the most of it. PMs are welcome.
Thanks very much.
