194/196 quotas

Does anyone know reasoning behind the dramatic resident quota increase from 2011 (15 tags) to 2012 (75 tags)? I believe there are 60 tags for the current year. Which still seems a bit high. I know this is primarily the Loyalton/Truckee interstate herd.

They changed the hunt dates to a month earlier so there will be way less deer in the hunt area.

Okay, thought that was it. I wonder if people were complaining of never getting a tag. Hopefully NDOW isn't thinking like CA fish & game where opportunity prevails over quality.

The tag increase and season changes have really affected the deer herd along with the Muzzy and bow hunts. There are also a ton of junior tags in addition to the 60 rifle tags during the November rut. I had the December muzzy tag in 2010 and it was a great hunt. I met some bow hunters while scouting that also were having a great time chasing nice bucks around. I was lucky enough to draw the bow tag in 2014 but I saw no mature 4x4s during my 12 days in the field. I don't think that the herd can take this pressure much longer.

Geez, Dude. $$$$. This is a capitalist society.......not a quality one.

Yea Strip, it's all about the dollars! Hey mulebuck, you can always turn that tag back, but you might have to wait ten years before you get another one!Are you going to hire a guide? There's some good one's in the Reno area, but there not cheap!

Haha, no way Brownie. You know how I feel about guides & outfitters...
Although there is one (maybe two) up there that should be of assistance. I think he's a sub guide for HWH. He prefers sheds and beer over cash.

Yea, HWH, I hear those guys are good. Might be able to bribe em, start with the chalkers, then work your way into the green ones and then they'll spill the beans on the hotspots. I like your way of thinking. But, don't try the beer, stick with the sheds, otherwise it could get ugly!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-15 AT 03:16AM (MST)[p]I spent 7 days hunting the unit Nov. 15-21 2014. I am a nonresident so I had little knowledge prior to my hunt. I would say I saw 30 different bucks that were four points or better. None of the bucks were over 25" wide and none of them were over 160" B&C. I only ran into a handful of other hunters so little pressure, other than non-hunters on the weekend(runners, mtn bikers, and jeeps). Like I said little prior knowledge I am sure there are some hotspots somewhere.

Probably issue more tags because it is still a very high success kill on four point bucks. I am sure there are a few big ones in there.

Better get up there!!!

Living in Reno I spend time lookin at the deer in this unit. It's got as good as quality bucks and just as big of bucks as 24 or 22. It's a top 3 tag in the state if you want a 200" buck. They've also have had pretty easy winters the past couple years so I imagine they're doin pretty good population wise.

Pm me with cell # or email an ill send you bucks from the past years. It's a very underrated hunt and one that I know fellas who rank it higher then unit 221-223 and they guide unit 221-223 every year. It takes a lot of points but the trophy quality is insane.

Wouldn't it be easier for you just to post those bucks here? That way all of us interested MMers could see them. And you wont have to send out so many emails and text.

Sorry didn't see this. I'm not sure how to upload photos from a phone but some are successful harvests, wouldn't be right to publish there photos on the Internet without their permission.

Here's a "successful" 194-196 harvest photo. This predates the ridiculous 2012 Quota and Season date changes which are currently ruining hunting in these units.

Im curious why a law enforcement officer is holding the rack. It appears the photo was taken in an office. Is that a fish cop? Are there any Kill shot pics?
Thats a great set of antlers. It would be good to hear the rest of the story.

From what I gathered from a friend is the buck was injured fighting and ndow didnt think he was going to make it so they put him down. It may not be the rigt story but that is what I was told. Google carson buck killed by ndow

Yep,That sounds more like it .
I think its safe to say that there hasnt been a buck of that caliber legally taken in that area in a very long time.
Its more likely he got a case of lead poisoning or broadhead infection in one of the housing subdivisions.

Seems like there was a 34" 7x7 killed just a few years ago with a archery tag. Still a pretty good tag, but you have to deal with private property, and all the nutbuts running their dog! But I know Mulebuck will be tolerant, he always is!!!
