Muley Early 101-109 Rifle

I was drawn for the early hunt, 101-109 for Mule Deer (Oct. 1-14) and am looking for advice on hunting locations. I'm in good shape and do not mind working/climbing, but want better than average odds on success. With so many hunters in the area, I know that I need some good advice on this. I am thinking about approaching the Ruby Mountains from the Eastern side (102) and working my way up to altitude. Open to suggestions, however.

Any advice on where to start would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Ask them if they have a RUBY MTN and East Humboldt Wildernesses
Humboldt National Forest Map. It is or was a Gray Color on the front. Very good detail on Unit 102.
Most public access places are on the East side and just a few on the west side. This map in from 1994 so might be outdatted or replaced, but give them a call or look up their web address and see what they have.

Here is another map to get also:

There were 4 of us that drew back in 2005 and hunted mostly in the northern part of Unit 102 and used the access points along Rd. 229 on the east side. There is 1 access that we went to from the west side too. I had a number back then and called and got the gate lock number for access to a ranch and from the vehicles and trailers that an Outfitter left there to take his hunters back into the top country. I left a "calling card" on one of the PU parked there, we stumbled on to the Outfitter that one of MM members was using. He still laughs to this day that I found where he was back there.
We could only hunt the day time and could not camp out there.

thats an easy draw..
tougher hunt..
junior hunt also starts..( I think)
opening upland birds..(I think)
lots of tags..
scout..
scout..
glass until you can't glass no more..
cold weather will help..
find a place outta way thats holds deer like a slide shoot or tiny draw..

I also hunted it in 2005, I believe.

We accessed via Lamoille Canyon. About 11 miles in. We saw 75 bucks Thurs/Fri before the opener but I only saw one buck I thought was a shooter. We were optically challenged. The shadows would start deep in those canyons at about 3:00 PM. The deer would stay in the shades but follow them into the open as the shadows grew. At times I could see bunches of "butts" at a mile of more but not horns.

I got back and bought some quality optics and never hunted it again.

We got 22" of snow on the night of October 2nd. It covered the feed for the horses so we took a couple of average 4X4s and got out of there.

Summary: Take good optics and be prepared for anything at that elevation.

I drew the early archery tag . I plan do do a few scouting trips as I have never set foot in the unit . I would suggest you do the same . I'll be there for two weeks once the season rolls around so I should be able to provide some decent info before your hunt takes place .

Sounds good. Thanks! I live in Las Vegas, but plan on a couple of scouting trips up that way? I'm hunting Africa in two weeks and will be there for 10 days? Probably scout up there after that Africa trip...
