Ruby Mountain Success

I had my son Chris at my side as I was shooting nearly vertical trying to hit this buck, Chris handed me my fourth and last arrow and I finally connected dropping him down an avalanche chute in the Rubies. Crazy Fun Hunt!!! The deer had no idea where the arrows were coming from.

It is Area 10. I'm going to have to practice that shot a wee bit more from now on. My angle compensating range finder told me I was shooting 29 yards at a 60 degree angle. for some reason I had to use my 20 yard pin instead of my 30 as I was shooting over with my 30. We found one of my arrows in a tree limb and should have taken a picture, it was nearly vertical in the tree limb. It's better to be lucky than good!!!

Great buck and awesome story!!

As to shooting over the buck this is a very common mistake and one that is a hard habit to break. When drawing your bow for a steep angle shot you need to draw pointed straight ahead( level) and then shift your body bend at the waist to aim for the angle.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking the same thing as I was drawing on the deer for the fourth time, but I'm pretty sure if I would have bent at the hip I would have went over the cliff. Very complicated situation, I'm glad the buck was a half-wit and gave me some practice time.

They're very fun mountains to hunt provided you can run a marathon with ease. At 53 years old and in rather poor shape they have been completely kickin' my butt the last few years, but it's the only tag I can seem to get anymore. I've managed to find some deer that aren't to hard to get to that make for a great hunt. If its got four points it's game on!!!

I once had a buck at 30 yards and at a steep angle while archery hunting. My range finder told me to aim for 16 yards and so I put my 20 yard pin right on him. The rangefinder told the truth because that buck is sitting up on my wall. fatrooster

Thanks for the compliment Fatrooster. I've found the most satisfying thing you can do in life is to take a child hunting, help him or her fine tune their skills to success and then watch the passion grow. Chris has managed to pull off some incredible stalks in the last 14 years and sure is fun to watch. I'm a little high mileage for my age and am not sure how much longer I'll be able to backpack the high country, having Chris at my side handing me arrows was a wee-bit comical reflecting back on the hunt. I've had that $2.00 four arrow quicky quiver for a couple decades, Chris has told me many times that someday I was going to wish for a fifth or even sixth arrow. I'm sure glad he shared in the kill, it will be a very entertaining memory and story for years to come.
