My dad and I drew this tag. For me, my only tag for the year. Ive hunted the Ruby's twice during archery. Both times being packed into the high peaks.

I realize this is a completely different style hunt than unit 10. My understanding is there are roads throughout and no wilderness. Our preference is to pay packers and ride in deep. I don't know that this is an option in 6. We like to get far away from other hunters, get up high, base camp and glass from the Ridges.

Is there plenty of roadless country in 6? Are the bucks up high towards the tops like the Ruby's? I've ordered maps.

Anyone willing to take a shot here and send me a pm on some good roadless areas that may be good indicators on areas to start looking in to? I would appreciate and welcome any general info on this hunt. I will keep this confidential unless tortured. Thank you for considering a response on this thread.

For theloveof it, pm returned.

The more I look at the maps and Google Earth the more the roads are a factor. I have a couple peaks/ranges in mind. Would like to bounce them off someone who's hunted the area.

I do not want to road hunt this, rather get off the road a few miles. Would like to be within a 30 minute walk in the morning to the glassing position. Maybe camping by the truck accomplishes this, but likely not?

BeastN,

One thing you need to keep in mind, There are big deer from the lowest point to the highest in area 6, and plenty of places to get away from the roads, seems to me, 90% of the archery hunters won't walk more than a few hundred yards from the 4wheeler to glass. this leaves miles and miles of hunter free country. IMO there is no reason to try and backpack hunt area 6 like area 10, the two units are nothing alike. Another thing to keep in mind, there are not a lot of tags, spread these people over a area as big as 6, and you've got a lot of empty country, concentrate on hunting during the week days and not the weekends and you have even less hunters out there.

good luck!

Doyle Moss guides for Ron Lara in that unit and they take really good bucks. There are a lot of roads, but there are good bucks.

Best buck I saw consistatnly when I hunted it archery a few years ago was 50 yards from a road every morning at sun up.

NVMDF - Thanks for the comments. We will hunt the opener for sure, and stay for about 10 days. We may even head back for a second trip depending on how it goes.

I'm looking for some high peaks that are roadless, looking over google earth and topos, and targeting some drainages that look like they have good feed. From hunting the ruby's, it become apparent certain type of feed attracts these deer and good numbers will hold up around a secluded food source.

We have backpacks and will plan on using them for overnighters.

Thanks!, TF
