LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-16 AT 12:48PM (MST)[p]The most recent inventory of the Pine Nut horses shows over 500 animals where the appropriate management level is between 119 and 179--approximately three times as many horses as are "allowed." Where excess horses exist they compete for food and water with native species, spread the seed of cheat grass and thistle, trample and destroy nesting habitat and thermal cover, etc. And this overabundance of horses is symptomatic of the entire state of Nevada.

The BLM is preparing a ten-year management plan, and is soliciting public input. You can bet that they will hear from every non-resident member of the dozens of horse advocacy groups who would prefer unlimited numbers of horses. It is important that hunters clarify their own competing interests. Contact John Axtell, BLM Horse and Burro specialist, and let him know where Nevadans stand with respect to these lands and wildlife. Call John Axtell at 775-885-6000, or write at 5665 Morgan Hill Road, Carson City, NV, 89701, and help support the BLM in standing up for interests of sportsmen in the face of withering pressure by those who would be content to see only horses on these lands. I had a link to his email, but it appears to have been broken. Any help in properly displaying this link would be appreciated (should be as simple as "[email protected]")
