043-046

I'm a newly addicted archery hunter on my 3rd year now, and have only hunted units 035 and 051 the previous two years. I drew 43-46 this year. I've been scouting a couple times in the Humboldt and Sonoma ranges, and seen a pretty good amount of deer, as well as people. However, I would be greatly appreciative of any information on the Tobin range specifically, or any other areas that might be worthwhile to go check out. Thanks!

Thanks for asking. I'd like to know if anyone has had any recent luck with deer in the Tobin range, and whether it would be better for me to spend time scouting on the north end around China mountain, or better on the south half around Tobin peak. Also, the Sonoma, Humboldt, an Tobin ranges are the main ones that I've seen in these units, but would appreciate hearing if there are other ranges with good concentrations of deer to scout. Thanks again.

I hunted the tobins years ago for a few years and most of the deer were always down low around the alfalfa fields at first light. They would head back up the mtn to bed for the day, turn around and come back down at night. Killed a few nice bucks back then.

Don't know much about the Tobins but know that there are plenty of deer all over those ranges. What is interesting about 043-046 is that its one of the few places where I see deer at all elevations in every range. And not just small deer, 4 points seem common around the 6000ft elevation. Good luck, anxious to hear how you do.

This year is killing me as I drew a December archery tag in 021 so I have to watch all the success stories roll in while I wait.

Hey thanks! I actually haven't even been looking lower at all. This time of year with the heat and nice weather, I've been heading straight to the top of whatever range I'm scouting, ie. 9,000ft, before I even pull my scope out. I'm finally going to get to the Tobin range next weekend, so I'll have to spend some time looking at lower elevations.

My son drew the late December rifle deer tag in 015, so I know what you mean, that's a long wait. Should be a different and interesting hunt!

Go get em! If you are able to take some pics scouting without giving away where in the range you are then you should definitely post them. I have heard of some giants in the Tobins. Maybe not the density you will see in 43, 44 or 46.

I've seen em, they are there

Yeah I actually have a pretty good picture of a nice buck from a few weeks ago that I spotted, but I can't seem to figure out how to post it on here. I'll keep trying and let you know if I do. Thanks

Here's your pic NVChris. Very nice buck for sure.

NVChris,

I spend alot of time in 015 in Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan chukar hunting.

Try to get ahold of me 10 days or so before your son's hunt.

I may be able to help, or maybe not.

Hey thanks for the offer, I'll definitely take you up on it! I'll reach out to you the first part of December. Thanks

Hey Califelkslayer, It's getting closer to my son's December 015 hunt so I thouhgt I'd check in with you to see if you have any recommendations. I put about 90 miles on my quad in 2-days in October just checking out road access and a little chukar hunting, so I have an idea of nice looking areas. Going to try and get back up there the weekend prior to the hunt to see if we can actually spot some deer. Thanks

Send him a PM or look for him in the California forum if you haven't heard from him

Hey, yeah I did see a few nice bucks on and just below the peak, along with quite a few bighorn sheep, but ended up hunting on the Humboldts, as the overall deer population was higher. Had some opportunities, but couldn't get it done.

Have you been scouting on 043-046 at all yet? Good luck!
