Hi Everyone,
This is my first time posting on Monster Muleys. So here is a little background info and I am open to any suggestions. I have been bow hunting going on my third season. My first season was this same hunt - Unit 113 Archery Cow Elk over two years ago. I grew up rifle hunting with my father. Archery was different. I loved the challenge of spot and stalk bow hunting.
Since my first time bow hunting I have harvested an Archery Mule Deer out of 11. The prior year was unsuccessful with the same tag as I have this year (113 Archery Cow Elk). I hunted strictly the southern end of the unit. During that hunt I learned how difficult it is to stalk a heard of cows with there calves. I had one great stalk where I came above 3 cows at 54 yards. I couldn't seal the deal. I knew my 50 yard pin was off and compensated the shot. I watched 3 arrows fly right over her back (windage was perfect).
Anyways, I am back for redemption. I have upgraded my archery equipment from my first used PSE and I now regularly shoot 70 and 80 yards now. I have read on the hunter information sheet that cow hunters are more successful in the north end of the unit - towards the reservation and south mountains. I know a guy that harvested a 348" bull two years from the north portion of the unit. He was sitting over water on the rut hunt.
What is the best access? Does anyone have experience in the north end of the unit elk hunting? Many people say to sit on water - I have a hard time sitting. Is that a common tactic for archery cow hunting? I am pretty familiar with the Kern Mountains, but completely blind on the north end.
I guess I am just looking for any information that may be beneficial.
Thank You in advance!
