Winter Kill

Is winter kill a big issue for the high desert units? Are the deer and elk in trouble in Nevada like they are in many of the other Western states?

I was wondering the same thing. Lots of reports out of the other states but nothing out of NV. A few hunting NV groups on Facebook have some chukar photos and most have little or no snow but I have no idea where they are.

I couldn't tell you for sure, but here is what I will say: I saw far more deadheads out shed hunting this last spring than I have in years past.

I live in the Elko area, and it seems like the winter is at close to, if not as severe, as what it was last year. I'm sure there will be some die-off, but no worse than last year would be my guess.

Surprised to hear that the weather this year is similar to last year. I would have guessed that it would be much worse than last year. Looks like your area has been spared the massive storms that have recently hit much of the West.

It's not so much that we haven't had any massive storms come through, it's just that we had just as many last year. It seems like the storms have spread themselves out more so everyone is getting hit, not just us.

I guess I need to retract my former statement. I've been asking around, and it turns out we have actually had about 3X the snow this year that we did last year, with more prolonged cold spells. It just seems like we don't have that much more since we had a mid-winter rain storm that melted a lot of it.
