All, I'm a long time mm member, minimal poster. I'm looking to possibly hunt deer and elk in NV in the future. I have no points and will start building points this year. I'd like to draw every 5 years or so. I'm an experienced hunter and can hunt archery or rifle. I'm in good shape. I don't need to hunt areas with giants but I would like to shoot 160" or 300" type animals. I'm not looking for anyone's honey hole. Just decent units. I have quite a bit of knowledge about CO and AZ. Thanks to anyone willing to get me started in the right direction.

The deer is possible to draw every 5 years if you go with 6 or 7 early, early hunts with lots of tags. I consider NV elk a once in a lifetime tag. It will take somewhere from 10 plus points to draw, even with 10 plus points the odds are not very good. The NR tag allotment is very stingy. There is also no magic point number that will guarantee you a tag. If you harvest an elk you have a long waiting period before you can apply again. Unless you are in your early 20's I would not expect more than one tag in your lifetime.

Nevada has great stats on there website including point total of bucks killed, elk points and main beam length and antelope horn length.

good luck,

Rich

A 300" elk is very achievable in every elk unit in the state. Most people set there goals a lot higher then that especially since it could be your only chance at an elk in Nevada. I also think a 160" deer is also possible in any unit, but some units will take more work then others. If you archery hunt, you could draw a deer tag every couple years in some units.

If you looking for a trophy elk then i would focus on 22, 23, 11, and 10. But like I said, a 350"+ bull is very possible in every unit.

If you want a trophy deer then you would want to apply for 24, 20 late, 22 late, 23 late (haha pretty much any late unit). These units will take a little time to draw. But any unit will hold 160"+ bucks if you put the work in. If you just want to draw then archery tags in 17, 16, 6, 7 are pretty easy to draw but you will have your work cut out.

I may be bias because I live here, but Nevada does a pretty good job at managing trophy big game. Most of the negative you hear is from people who like to drive there quads up and down the roads. If you get off the roads and in the back country, you will find good deer.

If you draw, send me a PM and I can give you more specific info.

Thx for the info. I'm always attempting to improve in my personal goals so 180" and 350" would be more realistic. I'll do a ton of research and pm when drawn. I appreciate the help.
