I hope to draw this unit this fall. I have been looking at google earth and there appears to be a fair amount of back country on this unit? Just was wondering If hiking in will get me away from people on the early rifle hunt? Also is water easy to find in the roadless areas or should I plan on packing water in? Not asking for any direction on where to go. I will take a few scouting trips this summer even if I don't draw just to get familiar, Just wanted to know what to expect before I go freelancing out into the wild! I plan on scouting the diamond mountain range.

very few roads go to the top of the diamonds.I think a fun hunt would be drive to the top the diamonds on old pony express trail and hike south as far as u would like towards diamond peak. It would take a couple days...
U would not see a sole scouting except a sheep hearder maybe and a rattlesnake or two...Lots of wild horses and deer.

I have hunted a particular area in between the above mentiond starting and stopping points a couple of times and I have never seen a lick of water where we were but pleanty of bucks and never a single hunter.

Thanks for letting me know about the water and the rattle snakes. I will have to pack a bunch in for the hunt if I draw. I love hunting rugged places like that

I have not hunted it myself, but a buddy of mine takes his kiddos there for their junior tags and they always bring toads home. I also put in for it this year so we will see. What about hiking in some water on a scouting trip and stashing it near a good spike camp location???

What about
>hiking in some water on
>a scouting trip and stashing
>it near a good spike
>camp location???

That's exactly what I would do once I figured out where I wanted to be. I did that very thing in two spots last year on the Utah rifle hunt. I ended up hunting both spots so it worked out great!

Do they hunt up night or down in the flat land near ag?

Hunted it last year. Walk 200 yards from rig and you will see nobody. Never witnessed so many road hunters and complete lack of people out of rig hunting and hiking. Never saw a single person out and about where we were. Saw a ton of bucks.

The youngest will do the foothills on a friends land, but the older goes up high. I will shoot for up high, you dont get big and bulky by being stupid and down in the flats. Though I am sure you could find decent bucks low.

From my experiences hunting Nevada the higher I go the more bucks I see but they are smaller bucks, bachelor herds of yearling to 3 year olds roaming the open high stuff.Thats typical during rifle but during archery I have caught a few big guys cris crossing the tops occasionally.

I applied for the late tag this year for this area. I don't have many points but excited to see a new area of the state. Maybe Ill spook up a chukar or two scouting for deer..... :)

I'm sure you will (chukar).

Hunted it in "95" missed 2 of the biggest bucks I ever shot at, one way over 30".

Hunted it with buddies tag about 10-11 years ago. Bucks weren't in previous spot. One day we hiked to top of Diamond. He missed opportunity at heavy, deep forked 26" 4x4. Then he missed shot at another 26" buck without the mass of first buck.

Unit has trophy potential but I haven't applied for this unit since, lots of great units in Nevada.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-17 AT 02:22PM (MST)[p]I hunted it twice, both in the 90's during muzzy season. Knight just came out with in-line muzzy and I was amazed shooting ~4" groups, open sights at 100 yards.
I hunted both Roberts Creek Mtn and the southern diamonds (west side) outside of Eureka.
During the day, I saw very few deer. In the evening, they came out of the woodwork. Tons of does and a few little bucks. Ended up with a small fork, though I had scouted a nice 4x4 during late archery season. Just couldn't find him again.
I think I drew it 2 years later, but ate tag soup.
I was probably hunting the wrong area(s) and/or just not high enough. It definitely had quantity, but I never saw the quality.
Granted this is 20+ years ago.
I still have that Knight wolverine and hope to break it out this year, but I didn't apply for this unit.

Hey, New guy here and kind of dredging up an older thread. Haven't hunted area 144 since 1991 when I was a kid. Our family has been hunting there since 1985. My cousin and uncle filled their tags opening weekend. My dad and I hiked 27 miles of terrain last weekend on the east side of the diamonds and didn't see but a handful of deer. Lot's and lot's of deer out on the alfalfa fields.

Anyone been out there and have any tips on good spots for a decent buck? Not looking for an exact spot and believe me I'm ready to hike as far as needed.
