Any general thoughts on the early rifle hunt for deer? What kind of movement could be expected, etc. I know the later dates would be better since it's closer to the rut, but I think the opener could be good too. Full moon for the opener however. I was thinking the last week of the hunt would be somewhat dependent on some cooler weather. I know lots of people are thinking hunt the rut, but if the last week is hot weather, seems like that would slow it down. Plus you'd be hunting the early stages of the rut to begin with.

Dont worry about the moon, deer still move early morning late evening.

Get high, especially if its warm. Even if its cold, they will still be high unless a big early snow came in then they MIGHT come down a bit. You can find them low in the P&J/Fields, but that is where every other road hunter is looking.

All about getting away from people. You will get out what you put into it. I remember 2 years ago, everyone was driving off the mountain 5 minutes before true sunset. We were still looking for a doe (no buck tag) and out walks 3 bucks. Get down off the mountain and spoke with everyone, and the same guys who were 300 yards from where the deer came out said they didnt see a thing (they didnt see these bucks due to driving out early).

All about putting in the footwork and time. You have the potential to find animals EVERYWHERE. Some get lucky and do not have to hike, some scout and find their animal and shoot first day before someone else can get him. Then theres those who dont want tag soup :)

I have early rifle hunts in northern Washoe County for my last two choices. If it comes down to drawing that I will be good with that since I love to scout during the summer and the bucks are usually in the same areas for the opener of the early rifle. There are only a handful of archery tags and a couple of muzzleloader tags before that so the deer shouldn't be spooked too bad if it comes down to it I hope to get on a good buck on opening morning. That is if I don't draw one of my top three choices. First two choices are late hunts and third choice is early muzzleloader with only two tags last year.

I have hunted once with my dad on a late tag and we only saw deer up the first hour or two and the last hour of daylight and never saw any rutting activity, temps were freezing cold 10 degrees or less the first week .then it slowley warmed up a bit then it snowed for a second time at the end of season.
