Drew my first ever late hunt in Nevada. My sons and I are looking forward to hunting this unit. It was my 4th choice as recommended by Huntin-Fool. My first three were for units that I know better. Normally hunt the Ruby's but in the past years the deer density and number of nice bucks have been diminishing. Way too many tags given out as demonstrated by tags given out this year. We are 3 of 40 tags that was offered for the 16's. I've been searching the internet gathering what ever I can about the unit but don't really find allot. I will call the Biologist in July and we will make a trip up in September for some scouting. The area seems to be all BLM and I'm looking for assistance from fellow hunters that have hunted this area in the past for starting points or any info on the late hunt. Is bringing quads out of the question or is this just a hiking unit. Which side of the mountain is best to hunt? Which unit 161 or 162? Thanks in advance for any info, pm me if possible.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-17 AT 12:34PM (MST)[p] I hunted area and 16 back when it was just one long season. And then you could hunt 161 through 164. I scouted from early summer all the way through and hunted the whole season . I wound up killing a really good buck at the very end of the hunt. He was one that I had spotted in July in a bachelor group of bucks. My advice to you is don't wait until September to scout. You need to find bucks you like early before any other hunts start and then concentrate on that area late in the season and they will be around somewhere and usually start some rut action by then.

Congrats on drawing 161 late, I also drew this tag this year as 4th option. I wish you best of luck. Unfortunately l too have no personal
Knowledge of the unit and hope I can get some general starting points to work from I will be tagging along. Best of luck in Nevada 2017!

Hi. Didn't get to hunt allot of the season but my son did take a small 4x4 in Stoneberger basin (161). Where we hunted you almost had to have a quad or a good 4x4 truck. Our first hunt took place in Mosquiti Creek ((162). This is allot of hiking with backpacks and tents. Unless you have horses and this would be a nice hunt. Good trail going in and getting around. Water at the top of the trail and hike out from there daily. Didn't see allot of deer (20 or so) but saw 100's of elk. Got sick of seeing them. Some decent bulls. Hunted Stoneberger Basin area. Very hilly but quite a few deer. Also allot of hunters. The bucks we saw were small. Son took one though. Horse Heaven and White Sage canyon (162) area had good quad trails but no deer but plenty of horses. I would do this hunt again if ever got drawn. Good luck. Disn't look at hunting 163/4. 164 is desert. I was told about an area to look into but never tried was (162 S) Fourmor Basin. Good luck
