231 Deer

I am one of the lucky ones to draw a rifle tag. I have read most everything I have found on line but would like to get some "personal" knowledge of the unit.

1. I live in Maine so I will not be scouting before I arrive.

2. Not anti guide but I can not afford one nor do I wish to use one if I could. To me a 27" 4X4 is more of a trophy than a 30" with a guide. Just me.

3. I have hunted solo all over the west and don't need my hand held.

4. I have also drawn a fourth season deer tag in Colorado so I hope to hunt Nevada the last 10-12 days of the season.

Thanks for any assistance.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-17 AT 12:44PM (MST)[p]Greetings MaineFlatlander, I have drawn an elk cow tag around that time (sept/oct). If I see anything decent, I'll pm you. Cheers!

Same as So_NV_Lady_Hntr, I too have a 231 cow elk tag for the end of Sept and will keep my eye out. Having been in the unit quite a few times on my own and other folks deer hunts I can say that it's not an easy hunt and the rifle hunt will be a tougher hunt than the archery and muzzy hunts. In fact, I don't even add the 231 rifle hunt as one of my choices and stick with the archery and muzzy hunts.

Shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll share a few general things with you.

Maineflatlander, check your PM's. I sent you a message. Have your map and a notebook handy when you call me.

I'll be in that unit off and on this summer preparing for my archery hunt. I'll let you know what I see.

I'm looking for general advice on where to start the scouting next weekend and areas to focus my attention on. Hopefully I can find a couple of good areas to investigate further this summer. Stoked beyond belief to finally draw the tag.

There are a few of us with a 231 Deer tag here on MM should be fun to see how it turns out.

Hopefully I get one, especially since I'm shooting the very first buck I see. Just want to finally seal the deal with the bow.

Just got back from my first scouting trip to the unit. Focused on a bunch of lower, 6K-7K areas and visited a bunch of springs. Definitely lots of deer around and nearly every spring was covered in elk sign. There were even elk down in the alfalfa fields in the morning, which is at like 5,200' so that was surprising.

One thing I discovered right away is that the junipers are thick and everywhere. I did run into several game cams at some of the more remote springs. Left a note on one particular cam, for an area that looked very promising, to see if they are planning on being there for archery or not.

Headed back up there again this weekend to focus on the higher areas and some of the burn areas.

Nelsonccc,
Did you see any decent Bucks ?
How is the growth looking?
Really hoping for good growth this year.

Not really, but I believe that is because it was my first time in the unit and I started at the lower elevations and a couple of springs that I could get to in a mile or two of hiking. I only glassed up a couple of smaller bucks.
