NV UNIT 161-164 OCT 2018 MULE DEER TAG

Hello Everyone!

I am a NV resident and I finally pulled a buck tag! Unit 161-164 in October. I am used to hunting whitetail in the Midwest (bow/gun) and I know this type of hunting is more glassing, spot & stalk, etc. Just getting advice on the area for that time of year. I know if it is snowing around that time that definitely helps the situation & usually and the hotter it is the higher you may need to go etc. Is there a need to get a guide or is this obtainable to do solo as a first time Western mule deer hunt? Are pack horses/mules essential etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am very excited! Thanks!

If you have the time to scout the area and learn where the deer are you won't need a guide unless you just want someone to hunt with you. I assume you drew the early rifle tag?
I had that hunt back before it was a split season and I spent the whole summer scouting it. The best buck I found while scouting was around the first of August. He was in a bachelor group of about eight bucks. I kept scouting different areas throughout the remainder of the summer and Hunted during the season in a few different areas and then wound up going back where I had spotted those bucks earlier in August. I wound up killing that biggest buck at the end of October. He is a mid 180s typical 4 x 4.
My point is if you work hard enough at it you will probably do better on your own then you will with a guide.

Thanks a lot for your opinions and experience. That definitely helps me get some insight on this. It is my first western mule deer hunt and I am used to hunting whitetails in the Midwest. It's pretty hard to draw a buck tag in general in NV as it has taken me about five years. I don't have any pack mules or anything like that and I'm just trying to decide if getting a guide will be worth it since it has taken this long etc. That's a nice buck you got !
