unit 033

I just drew unit 033 archery deer and was wondering if anyone had hunted this unit, and if so, what did you think of this unit? (Deer populations, buck to doe ratio's, quality of bucks etc). Any tips would be greatly appreciate. Thanks

I have not hunted it in a few years. From what I have been told deer numbers are down, as well as quality. It is beautiful country and fun to hunt. I will send you a pm. JB

Thanks for the input JB. My hunting partner and I contacted the refuge biologist but got little information. Basically, the information given was the same information found on the "Nevada Hunter Information Sheet. This is all good, but I'm trying to narrow my search to a couple of areas so I can maximize my scouting trips. I'm definitely excited about this hunt since it appears that Sheldon is much like Heart Mountain Antelope Refuge (Oregon) which I've been blessed to hunt twice over the years. Again, thank you JB.

My buddy hunted archery two years ago did see one giant but few and far between in that country. Predators have really hurt that unit due to no management.

I knew a guide that guided on the Sheldon. Looking through his photos of the 1990s and early 2000s was jaw dropping. I think in early 2000s a lady killed a 200 plus buck on the archery hunt. As it has been said the lack of predator management has caused the decline of the unit as it has on Hart Mountain. JB

No doubt predators have hurt them but the biggest culprit im my opinion has been wildfires. Catnip and Badger used to be some of the best mule deer habitat around. Now its mainly cheat grass from some huge fires that came through. Its really been sad to see. Id look in the deep gulleys north of catnip for deer. There are still some that hang out in those.

Thanks for the input. My hunting buddy made a trip down to the Sheldon over the 4th of July and turned up two small four points. It was somewhat discouraging but not a total loss. Talking to some hunters that were scouting for their antelope hunt, he learned that one of the outfitters focuses his efforts (and apparently was successful) on the southern edge of the unit. I will be heading down there this weekend to see what i can turn up.

My 15 year old daughter drew it. We had never been, and were not able to find good info either. So we went with what we had from NDOW. We were not successful. Only 3 doe. With the exception of that 13 mile no hunt area... we saw them there.

Any info on the area would be great. She has the junior tag, so since we did not find any on the muzzy hunt, she is going back for riffle during her fall school brake.

It is a long drive from Reno, so we have not been able to scout unfortunately.
