first time elk hunter needs some help

I drew my very first elk tag. A bull elk tag in nevada. early rifle tag unit 16/17. I plan on hunting the table mountain. my buddy and I hiked the south end of the table a couple weekends ago. Didn't see very much. I was kind of under the impression that I'd be able to see 2 to 300 elk a day.. but I only saw 2 or 3 cows. granted it was a quick overnight trip but I was a tad discouraged. I'm planning on going back up this Friday after work and backpack from the east this time. any suggestions for locating this time of year? Should I stay up high and glass down, or vicaversa? water and cover right now is the need for elk? or should I expect for them to be a bit vocal? thank you all

LAST EDITED ON Aug-29-18 AT 01:08PM (MST)[p]The early rifle falls peak rut for that unit. The bulls you find on the east side will move up on the table for the most part to rut. Get up on the top of the south end of the table between mosquito creek trail and barley creek trail and you will see plenty of elk. Hundreds of elk is accurate. Last time I was up there a bull had 63 cows in just his harem. Congrats on pulling an amazing tag. Should be a great experience.

I think there's only 10 tags for that early hunt in september. Lucky draw indeed! They should be screaming, and only 9 other hunters! My son drew one of the late hunts a few years back and we hunted the south end of Table Mt. Incredible country.Great time

shoot I thought there was only 5 resident plus one non resident. not counting governors tags and silver state tag. whatever those are called

thanks!! I'm going back up this weekend. gonna try the green monster this time. then probably hike to the area you mentioned

5 tags for the area is correct. I was up on table for my archery deer hunt earlier this month and saw a lot of cows. We went up barley. If I had the early tag I would definitely focus on the south end of table. Awesome country and I'm sure the bulls will be up there with their cows come September

how'd you do for your archery tag. were you the guys going in on horseback?

No we did not go in on horses. We packed in Saturday morning but didn't see the bucks I thought we would on top so we packed out Sunday and found good bucks in another part of the monitors. Going back Wednesday

well the second trip up turned out better than the first. saw tons of elk 150 plus and a muley that was one of the largest ive ever seen in person
