After having the time of my life hunting every weekend for 2 months straight with my 11 year old son, it was my turn to hunt for myself. Conditions were brutal. No snow, crunchy timber, and most rutting action was nocturnal. Deer sightings were really low, with some days of zero deer. I pounded back the miles on the ol' Sheep Hunters and really felt like I was beating my head against a brick wall. On day 7, I had wet conditions to soften up the noise. I was still-hunting my way up a nice ridge when I encountered my buck. He was 40 yards from me and had no idea I was there. When I saw him, I instantly recognized him as a buck I've watched and filmed for 2 out of the last 3 winters. I knew he was a great character buck and having the personal history with him, I slipped the saftey off and dropped him. I am stoked to have been able to kill 2 bucks back to back that I have had a lot of personal history with. I first saw this buck in the winter of 04/05. I had nicknamed him Deep Forks that winter. He was really narrow, but the forks were really nice.

The winter of 05/06 he came in a little different. He had a big inline on his one side which was just his G3 coming off the main instead of the G2. He had dropped his G4 and he grew a huge G1. He was still really narrow but I wasn't sure he was the same buck. That year I nicknamed him Eyeguard Buck.

My buddy, Matt, was the one to put 2 and 2 together and figured the buck was one and the same. I never saw hide nor hair of the buck the winter of 06/07. I assumed he was catscat. But when I saw him last Friday, I instantly knew Matt was right, Deep Forks and the Eyeguard buck were the same deer.
He has some awesome character. He is 24 inches tall with a 18 1/2 inch outside spread. I didn't even think about score when I shot him. I just knew he was the buck I wanted because of my personal history with him. Looking at him on the ground, I was thinking he'd gross in the mid 180's as a 7x7. I think the narrow spread had me underestimating him big time. I was shocked when I finally put the tape on him. He grosses 199 6/8. His stong side has a 91 inch frame. Those G3's are flippin amazing. The big eyeguard is pretty cool as well.

AWESOME BUCK!
I love those tight, heavy, tall bucks!
------------------------------------------------------
By the way,
I live in UT.
There are a lot of UTARDS that live here.
I have also seen quite a few WYOMORONS, NEVADUHNS, COLORADORKS, ID-IOTS and AIRHEADZONANS in my travels.

LOVE THOSE BACK FORKS!!! are you kidding me!! that is awesome, congrats on an awesome buck and a great story. pretty neat to have pictures and film of him alive then now have him on your wall, definitly will make a sweet mount with those deep forks.

Wamuleyhunter,
I just finished up doing the Euro on him. I love the skull look and have done this with most of my bucks the last few years. I've got a small house and just don't have the wallspace for a ton of mounts. I'm actually running out of space for my Euros too. Looks like a few bucks might be destined for the shed pile. :)

Man i am just in love with this buck, i love those tall tall horns and those enormous forks!!! I got to see a picture of that euro mount. I know your going to have to build another house for all your sheds and all your mounts, it must be rough :) But i was curious if you could give a measurment on those G3's of that big guys. probably the biggest i have ever seen, especially since they match. well done.

awesome deer, whats it like hunting some of the most beutiful country in the world, for one of the most sought after trophy...

Way to go STEVE-O!!!! Truly and incredible Deer!!! High and narrow best low and wide any day of the week......Surely you could find an extra 1/2" in there somewhere to put him over 200??

Gila,
I don't think you caught my comment on the other thread. I saw you made some comment about Ryan there which I really didn't understand until now. I blocked out the company name on the hat because I didn't think we needed to advertise what forest company I was working for when we found that Grizz kill. It was not a MC hat. Turned out that we ended up getting quite amount of press and the mill's name was in the Kamloops newspaper, so it wasn't a big deal blockin out the name after all.

Bessy,
I brought home a little souvenir from this year's fire.

Overall, Muley Camp was pretty much uneventful. This year, no one was sent to the hospital, which is pretty amazing considering the past history of our crew. :) The only potential disaster was put out really quickly. Why they built the tent with a chimney hole flap is beyond me???
Most of the guys had different goals this year, as many of them didn't have much time to hunt, so they were looking for some meat to put in the freezer. There was one other decent buck killed in our camp though. Here's a pic of the buck that BCbucks killed the same day I took mine. Not bad for his last day eh?

I've been fascinated by the color of the antlers you post. What do they rub on in the "Great White North" eh? The ones around here get a real grey color, rubbing in sage, pinion & juniper.

Post Script: Good job as usual. Bet you have a lot of friends over just to eat all the meat you got in the freezer!

that does it, im moving up there. i can only take so many of your posts before figuring out where i need to be.
That is a really interesting color on the racks. all the bucks in my neck of the woods have really dark horns being as its all burned, but its definitely more of a chocolate brown than yours. im curious what theyre rubbing on too?

Steve,

Congrats on another great year and another stud. That is a beautiful buck, and I'm sure you wokred hard enough to deserve him and more.

I'm curious as to how far he was from when you took those other pics of him that we saw a couple of years ago and that you reposted for this. Was he in the same area/drainage or had he moved quite a distance?

Congrats again. Good job.

ICM,
He was very close (within 10 kms) from where I saw him hanging with his winter range buddy, MnT, in the past. There is a lot of heavy timber in this area. Really the chances of running into him were extremely slim. Gotta say that luck played a huge role on this hunt.

As for the comments about antler colour, I really don't know which tree causes which colour. These bucks rub on Western Red Cedar, Western Hemlock, Lodgepole Pine, White Spruce, Douglas Fir, Balsam, Alder, Maple, Birch and Aspen to name a few. I think the lighter antlers might be from Alder but that is just a guess.

BADGEBOY!!!

LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER CLOSE CALL!!!

YOU BOYS MUST REALLY STOKE THE OLE FIRE UP!!!

I WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS MYSELF THIS YEAR!!!

THE FIRST NIGHT WENT DOWN TO 15 DEGREES & I DECIDED WE'D TOUGH IT OUT!!!

ONE NIGHT OF THAT BS & BY NIGHT 2 I STOKED THE OLE STOVE UP!!!

HAD THE DAMN STOVE & PIPE COMPLETELY CHERRY & WAS THINKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO BCBOY LAST YEAR,LOL!!!

TEMP IN THE TENT AVERAGED ANYWHERE FRON 15 TO 110 THIS YEAR!!!

Hey Steve,
Nice buck. It sure has been a wierd Whitetail season. With no snow they just didn't seem to be cooperating. I tried rattling a few times but no results. Had some good mule deer hunts though. I was in on three kills. One of them I called in for a friend. Grunting, raking a tree, some scent, and a few doe calls did the trick. When we got into position it took about 15 minutes.

Dang it!!! Another Washington buck slipped across the border... lol...

All kidding aside, that's a really, really nice buck. I like the fact he's as narrow as he is. That makes for allot of character in my book. Great to see bucks like this dropping in the northwest.

p.s. Is it me or are there some really big bodied bucks hitting the ground this year?

Congrats!!!

Al,
Nice to hear from ya. It sure has been a tuff late season around here too. The deer are just scattered from high elevation to low and everywhere in between. The rut is pretty much a done deal now.
As for whiteys, I know I should get out and look for one before the end of the season, but I just don't have much of a drive to kill a little buck. With the freezer overflowing with meat this year, it's hard to get excited dropping one. If we had the quality of the Peace whiteys, then that would be another story. :)

Gila,
It was the Great Fire of 06. I burned er down in a blaze of glory. Ended up going to the hospital to get the 2nd degree burns on my hands dealt with. Wouldn't let them wrap up my trigger finger though. The doctor thought I was crazy, but I wasn't going to let some burns and bandages hamper my hunting season. :)

good going, 'bboy'...dang, now we won't get any more 'live' pics, of that big guy...you better get us goin' on a 'new' one..congratulations...
