The good thing is he is also swept into the Russia Investigation via Cambridge Analytics - Spectrum Health - Alpa Bank - Trump Tower Servers.

Like Manafort and Flynn once he gets tossed under the bus he will flip on Dear Leader & Co.

"No specific duties". Bannon is simply a lackey for the real power behind Dear Leader, the Mercers. He has no duties because he is not there for what he does, but for what he did.

Talk is cheap and Bannon is caught up in the Mueller investigation. If he plans to go to war for Trump he is going to have a walk a very narrow path to do it. Even Bannon isn't above the law or the reach of Mueller and his investigation.

One would have thought that Trump would rather have had Bannon inside the tent pi$$ing out instead of outside the tent pi$$ing in.

In addition you need to realize that what Bannon has in mind is to "Beat into submission" the ideas of Jared Kushner, Ivanka, H.R. McMasters and Gen. Kelly. So when he says he is going to war for Trump, he is also going to war with those around Trump. That is going to be an epic battle that leaves no winners and harms the country. But hey, as long as Trump is President you all are still winning even if the country ends up losing, but who really cares about that.
