Waxin poetic but in the end we're all hunters, good luck lennie! Is there a finer meal than the taste of the heart of the animal that gave his life so we may live........

Yeah, best of luck, and no matter the size, I hope the recovery goes well and all the meat arrives safe and sound and you enjoy the hunt.

Got into Custer Tuesday and there was a little smoke in the Black Hills. Tuesday night a 60 mph wind took the fire across the entire park and out through the Wind Caves and private land. 3rd largest fire in modern Black Hills history.

The southern 2/3 of the park is blacker than coley's azz and they're going to have to feed most of the animals through the winter or they're dead. we didn't see any burnt bison but I saw pictures fire fighters took of dead deer and elk. it's pretty sad.

I was supposed to hunt Wed-Fri but didn't get to go in the until Friday. we found some good bulls in the few unburnt areas and I took a B&C bull with the nicest cape I've seen in this area. they usually rub all their hair of on the pines.

Anyway it turned out okay in the end. but of all the things that can go wrong a forest fire the week before Christmas in South Dakota was the last thing I would have considered.

Dang. Sounds like you did good inspiite of the fire though.

Maybe the new growth will compensate for the loss of big game by producing a flurry of big game feed and better habitat for a long term benefit.

Any pictures?

A lot of the trees are dead. but the grass for the most part may be the best in years given the right spring conditions.

Unfortunately lack of feed wasn't an issue that the park had to deal with anyway on a regular year so the loss is a true loss.

It will take a lot of hay to get the animals through. I'm not sure how they're going to fund it but I'm sure it will be done.
