farmers: Now you can keep your farms in the family

President Trump says tax reform has ended the 'death tax' that unfairly punishes American farmers.

President Trump on Monday declared that the ?American dream is roaring back to life,? arguing during a speech at a farming convention in Tennessee that the recent tax bill he signed into law will yield great benefits for the country?s farmers.

?In every decision we make, we are honoring America's proud farming legacy,? the president said at the American Farm Bureau Federation?s Annual Convention in Nashville.

Trump touted how the new tax law now allows farmers to immediately write off 100 percent of new equipment.

?That is something that I think will be the sleeper of the bill,? Trump said. ?You deduct it all in one year as opposed to over many years.?

Trump also talked up how the new tax law rolled back the estate tax by doubling the exemption threshold, meaning few farmers would have to pay those taxes. Trump told the crowd that family farms and small businesses will now be spared the ?punishment? of ?the deeply unfair estate tax.?

?So you can keep your farms in the family,? he said, acknowledging to the crowd that the provision ?was a tough one to get approved.?

Dude...come on. We're happy for you. FTW IS LIVID. Be is trying to figure out how to make an intelligent argument against this wonderful news and Piper crawled even further into his self pity hole.

Nemont, Your graph may be accurate but it is also very misleading. It doesn't take in to account the amount of money farmers spend on accountants and lawyers to avoid the estate tax. These fees can easily run in to the ten of thousands of dollars. Avoiding the estate tax is not hard if you start early and have extra money for a good accountant but it is costly and often leads to family fights that can result in the farmer selling the farm.

Out of 320 million Americans how many paid the estate tax last year? Total of 5,611. How many were family farmers? 11. It is a crisis.

I have been through three estates on the family ranch and we paid little to nothing to not pay estate tax. $150 to form a limited partnership and $56 to file the successor general partner. Tough duty,

Nemont

Nemont, maybe you paid little to nothing. That was not the case when my wife inherited her parent's farm along with the investments.
Also writing off new farm equipment the first year will be a help to farmers due to the big cost of farm machinery.

RELH

My father payed no estate tax when his mother died but her plan to avoid the tax ultimately cost him more than 1/2 a million.
Farmers pay more to avoid the tax than they pay in estate tax. Is the estate tax more an accountant and lawyer employment plan or is it a way for the government to generate revenue?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-18 AT 07:16AM (MST)[p] There were so many ways to avoid the tax that it was a cottage industry. Lack of planning or poor planning should not be confused with saving the farm.

It should be easy to quantity for you stable geniuses just how many farms will be saved by this vs how many would have been lost to the estate tax. What is that number?

Nemont

Nemont is exactly right. when my dad died 20 years ago the limit was 600,000 . the farm was worth about 3 times that at the time. with a good lawyer and a few thousand bucks for his time we never paid a cent in taxes on the estate. take that same scenario today and the new 22 million limit can be pushed out to at least 66 million per heir. glad to see you folks looking out for these poor people.

As far as the immediate write off ( section 179 ) that's been in effect for years, 2017 limit was $ 510,000. I haven't had to depreciate anything long term since I can remember. any farm that has more than $510,000 in new purchases every year must be in that poor abused 66 million class . not many of those in my neck of the woods. like zero.

But hey, I'm sure it has to sound great if you're an ignorant city slicker.

Glad you agree with me that the graph doesn't show the true cost to farmers of the estate tax.
Hard to feel sorry for those in the cottage industry like accountants, lawyers (as a group are one of the top donors to the democratic party) or insurance salesmen that get to sell life insurance to protect your heirs from estate tax if you die an untimely death.

I never thought you were a clown like the rest of the circle jerk here.

Can you show me a family farm that doesn't need some form of protection against an untimely death? Life insurance protects against far more threats to the family farm/ranch than the estate tax.

I have some highly sophisticated farm operators who are also life insurance clients. Funny thing is none of them were planning for the estate tax but all planned for their debt, to fund the buyout of a widow if farming with a relative and/or as a vehicle to provide liquidity without selling off part of the farm.

Nobody was asking you to feel sorry for anyone. The updating of the estate tax does zero to save any family farm. Almost all of them will still spend money with attorneys for plan their estates, with insurance brokers to provide a solution in the event of a death or they will mot spend the money and create big headaches form the next generation. I know what the smart ones do, the dumb ones are left to their own devices. Can't feel bad about them either.

So you both cheated the government out of its riteful income and added to the national debt? Judas! Who do you expect to pay for this?

Cheating? Really that is what you are calling the legal structure allowed by law.

Some times I can not keep up with how fast you Trumpteers change your story.

So let's see since it should be an easy number, do tell how many family farms has Trump saved by this new tax bill?

Nemont

If the average ignorant Joe had any idea how many ways there are for the rich to game the system they'd chit their pants.

The more money you have the better the system works for you. as Anthony Hopkins said, " Never feel sorry for a man with an airplane " . but you slurpers can't stop crying big crocodile tears for them.

You deserve to get screwed over.

Dude the best answer to that is: Have you ever seen a poor man offer up jobs to the working person? John F. Kennedy even knew that and proposed tax cuts to create more job openings with small and large companies.

RELH

Define poor.

I know lots of guys with employees who don't have an airplane nor are they in the top 1%. they aren't worried about uncle sam cutting into the 22 million they have headed their way either.

How much lower can unemployment go? who do you know who's willing to work that doesn't have a job ? I know of NOBODY. so ,why again are we giving " yuge " tax cuts to the wealthy ?

Dude the owners of several small business here are very happy about the new tax bill as it is going to give enough money back that they are thinking about putting on more employees.
Also in your farming community you might not be seeing the amount of people that are working at jobs below their experience or education and are looking forward to jobs opening in their field of expertise that will give them a higher paying job with better benefits with some of the large corporations. Just because you can not see it where you are at, does not mean it fails to benefit many in the more urban areas of our country.
As for that saying, "you don't see poor people hiring employes" that came from my father in law who was a very successful farmer and probably a little smarter then you and me both.

Bret Baier asked a top Democrat about her opposition to the tax reform law, after a utility in her state announced the legislation moved them to cut rates to her constituents.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said the tax law gives "giant giveaways to big corporations that, right now, the Republicans plan for hard-working families to pay for."

Warren was a staunch opponent to the tax law, signed by President Trump around Christmas.

Looks like the fake Indian is going to take a hit from her constituents after they got their utility bill lowered due to the Trump tax bill and she campaigned against it as a good party Democrat.

maybe only on the rez. besides low paying jobs don't help the economy. lots of people like power plant workers, miners, etc took huge pay cuts and now are working for low pay. tax cuts are a way to help boost industry and provide higher paying jobs. but that's the kind of stuff liberals hate because it reduces independence on the government. the only industry democrats are growing is the government.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-11-18 AT 12:55PM (MST)[p]Ropin,

How do you feel about adding Trillions more debt to the backs of your grand children? That is as bad as growing government and it is going to happen because fiscal discipline is out the window under the Trump brand of Republicans.

If you lower taxes then you should also lower spending. They are doing the opposite, lowering taxes and increasing spending. Watch and see what "deal" will be made with the democrats in the coming weeks. It will grow government and it will increase spending and that is with a Republican White House and Congress. What happens if the liberal win back Congress?

There is a labor shortage in this country plain as chit. when landscapers are paying $20 an hour for wetbacks if a skilled American can't get a good job the problem is you. you're a loser.

Why do you suppose Trump is importing workers to wipe butts at his gold coarse ? you tell me? go get a job there he needs you.

Remember Carrier? another failure you don't speak of. but in spite of all this we still have a labor shortage . but you want to borrow money to create jobs . brilliant.

Dude that article is as slanted as you are. The company still has 1,100 workers. If they had closed the plants as planned and moved to Mexico there would be no American workers and 1,100 more draining the unemployment funds.
The failures of one company does not tell the whole story as you may believe.
