Can someone tell me why the authorities gave this guys guns to his father after seizing them?

The dad probably had a signature on an internet forum that said something about his cold dead hands and smoking red cherry hot somethin or other. Figured the father was one if the good white guys. Maybe even an NRA member...

It is possible the law in that state allows the guns to be given to a family member instead of actual confiscation by law enforcement that will normally destroy the firearms. The big question is if the Father violated any law by giving the guns back to the son.
