Helping out a friend here, tell me if I'm right in saying the details of his taxidermy agreement sound very fishy.

No deposit asked for. No order form filled out nor receipt for antlers and skin given.

The taxi asked him if he could use the client's CC to order the supplies!?? My friend assumed this would be for his mount, right? Well, the guy charged over 1000.00 to the card to two different form companies.

I told my friend that there is no way the form supplies for one elk should cost that much, and not only that, if the amount was not the amount agreed upon, its borderline CC fraud.

He has no contact with the taxidermist since. The phone numbers he has have been disconnected, the email still appears valid but he has had no response.

What say those of you in the business? Should he be as worried as I am about his mount??

Sounds like your friend has been taken! Post up the name of the taxi, so nobody else has the same happen to them.

No disrespect, but what was he thinking giving him his cc number? Yes he should be worried, and no way does one elk form cost 1000.00!

Cancel that CC right away!!!! If he is lucky he'll have theft and fraud insurance and the CC company will take the hit. If not, cut the loss and try the hell to find the guy to get the cape and antlers back!!!!

Paula, if it was your animal, you know you wouldn't have left the taxi shop without detailed documentation of the transaction. A deposit is normal and is used to offset shop costs/wages/etc. --- the taxi asking to use your friend's CC sends up WAY too many red flags!

Ditto to what BCBOY said concerning CC fraud!!! Make finding the taxi a PRIORITY and retrieve the trophy ASAP ...

BTW, how did your friend get hooked up with this wannabe, anyway?

My friend is a nice man.I guess he is now back in contact with the guy, and is assured the mount is in progress. He is willing to give the guy a chance to make things right, as he feels this was more like a gentleman's agreement and my friend is definitely a gentleman.

I blame myself for this. We never really talked about what he wanted to do when he got his bull. I had to return to work, and he tagged out the next day. By the time I talked with the group, it had already been dropped off on the recommendation of the place he used for lodging.

I won't name the taxi for now, as I am not party to any of the conversations or agreements, and I hate a book being judged by its cover. I'd be poor at my own job if I did that. But my spidey sense is pegged by the totality of the circumstances, ya know?

At the very least, this guy should try using more legitimate sounding business practices.

I appreciate everyone's input. Lv2- not Paula, perhaps you have me confused for another female predator. :)

Money is just money. It hurts like a damn when someone dupes us or steals from us, but in the end we can continue on and learn from our mistakes and try not to let it happen to us again. The concern with bad taxidermists is they take something much more important from us, a precious trophy that can never be replaced.

Lisa:

My bad --- no idea why I didn't type your name right (my old timer's kicking in).

Anyway, hope your friend's situation gets ironed out smoothly ...
