Recently noticed one of my turkey mount's legs looked different. Upon closer examination I noticed that some little bug has eaten a good portion of the skin on the legs. I haven't seen any alive, but there are several little "skeletons" laying around. About 1/8" long kinda of looks like weevil. I have 10 or so deer, elk and antelope heads in the room. How nervous should I be and what do I do??

I've heard everything from don't worry about to fumigate the entire house to the point you can't live in it for a week.

Do any of you do preventative measures to avoid this going forward?

I had a turkey tale and a beard and found those bugs eating that tale and beard, got rid of that tale and beard.

You need to find away to kill those bugs. If you got room in your freezer put your mount in there for awhile it should kill them. That's what I've read good luck.

What you have is carpet moths. The larvae is what does the damage and yes they look like weavels. These can be a very serious problem. First and foremost you need to get that Turkey out of the house and either freeze it for a couple weeks or place it in a trash bag and spray it with a good bug killer. Closely inspect all of your other mounts. A good fumigation of your house might be a good idea. These pests can destroy all of your mounts if left untreated.
Keep in mind that the Turkey is likely to attract these vermin again.

Bug Bomb(Fogger spray)the room and or the entire house. Dust your trophies off often.

It's not the bugs that are the problem, its the mount. A good mount will not have anything for bugs to eat. A reputable bird taxi will have fleshed out EVERYTHING, tails, wings, etc and injected legs to elimnate any consumable for bugs. No food, no bugs.

Sorry Charlie but you're wrong. I am a good taxidermist and I can tell you that they are not eating any flesh, fat or meat. They feast on skin and feathers. They will eat quills and feathers will fall out. They will eat the webbing between the toes of waterfowl and only the bone and Masters Blend will be left.

They're back!!!!! I moved this turkey outside in the garage for the rest of the winter with a garbage bag sealing it and full of raid spray. I then set off fog bombs in the basement as I was told this would finish anything around off. After not seeing any signs of bugs I brought the bird back in side. This weekend I noticed feathers around the base and see larva casings again. Now what?????

Hate to say it but get rid of the bird ! If you have other mounts they will destroy them in time.
